My 50,000th Ebay Purchase...

Well not really. But I swear it feels like it!! Recall this post where I was searching for some Louis chairs?!? Well, I was hoping to land 6 chairs for under $1000 and that is what I scored on Ebay!
Just call me the negotiator....because this was a great deal! However, 2 things that I may have to change, the GOLD color paint to (probably) white....& in the distant future, maybe even removing the cane backing & replacing it with a solid back. For now, thankfully I'm HAPPY with my choice.

The next thing I have to figure out is, will I be SELLING my current farm style table & chairs or just the chairs??!??  I will make that decision within a week or so. In the meanwhile, do any of you have any suggestions on what COLOR combo would work well for these chairs and maybe even a fabric suggestion??!?

What would you do if these were yours??

  1. Paint them white for sure, and any great print on the seat will be great.

  4. Hey Jen!

  5. OMG!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE those chairs!! I am so jealous! IF they were mine I would paint white and distress the edges so the gold shows thru and then put a different vintage fabric on each chair.....or 2 wildly floral fabric choices (for the head of the table)and the other 4 in a more subtle print.....or some cool mod fabric and the 2 main chairs in a script fabric of some kind to go with your fabulous art work;) Can't wait to see what you do!! Good luck!

  6. I'm not always a fan of cane furniture but I think that it gives these chairs a French provincial look which I like. They'd definately look better in white though. :) Hmmmmm...... if I didn't live so far away, I convince you to sell your old chairs.... TO ME. lol! Love your style & your taste. I have this idea that I'm going to find 6-8 different secondhand chairs that I love & paint them the same colour........ yet to happen. Maybe I need to jump back onto
    e-bay: it's been awhile. Ciao. :)

  8. Jen-

fabulous find! If the cane looks in good condition then I would leave it- cane is such a great design element! Then paint white as you said. With your great eye for colour and pattern, sure you will find great fabric!

    What about painting chairs black?

    All the best,

  12. i love those chairs!! i would paint them white, leave the cane because it gives character and dimension and choose a neutral print, maybe a medium-light gray with black accents.

  13. they are gorgeous! great find! dont paint em!

  14. love them Jen! Yes, paint white too. And if you do add a fun print for the cushion like Trina Turk's Peacock in Punch or Driftwood might be fun (it's indoor / outdoor for easier clean-up).

All went well thanks for asking! :)
I think I should keep the table too, but I think I'll know better when I see the new chairs side by side with the table.... :))

I am also leaning toward a neutral print, something that will still look good a couple yrs from now. Thanks!

Hmmm black....I didnt even think of that. I'll keep that in mind. :) As for the cane, I think Im just going to keep it that way.

  21. Jen...they are a fantastic buy..and in mint condition..well done.

I think your options are endless when it comes to what to do with them...if you google Louis dining chairs there are hundreds of images to give you loads of inspiration..(which Im sure youve done )but may confuse you more?? lol

I like the idea of mismatched chairs...and I actually love the gold...but a complete set in gold may be a bit much...but it does bring out the gold picture frame on your wall.
I would leave them as is at the moment...swap your chairs around..and see if it grows on you.

Otherwise..I would paint them black..with a bold print fabric...or....for a more softer tone...natural linen...youve done the white...I say try something different.

As for your existing dining suite...I would sell the chairs...the table can still work with your new chairs...perhaps paint the white...try another colour?

Either way I know they are going to look fab...you have a wonderful way of fitting old and new together perfectly. Good luck lovely..cant wait to see the finished results. x

  22. CRISITIN:Oh! That Trina Turk fabric is so pretty. I will keep that one in mind... :)))

I definitely do want to get something that is easy to clean...an indoor & outdoor fabric is a + !

    Thank you so much!

  24. Those are FABULOUS!!! You should be proud. I would probably do all matte white frame with faux glossy-white croc upholstery. I've got a pair of chairs I'm doing that to right now, and it is killer!

Where are you getting your faux croc upholstery from? I'd love to really consider that. Let me know thank you!

  28. You should paint them black and put on turquoise seats :) I have been in love with turquoise with black...
These are such beautiful chairs! I bet they will look great no matter what color u paint them :)

  29. I love an ebay win - good work, doll. I think paint each of them a different bright colour and upholster with contrasting fabrics/materials for an eclectic boho look. Have fun with the project and looking forward to seeing the pics

  31. I would have said paint white with a really bold print, but I am really liking the white faux croc idea- sounds fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love the new chairs! And I love Nichole's idea with the croc upholstery. (:

And your old chairs are darling. I think if you decided to sell them they'd go very quickly. So cute.

  33. Ahhhh!!! omg omg omg you got your louis chairs! I am SO excited! (and gosh, they hardly look like they need to be refinished! i kinda dig the gold?) but in-person the story might be different.. SO exciting :)

    xo

    ReplyDelete
  34. (and since you asked about fabric haha) let's say you keep the more traditional gold paint, a bold graphic like chevron or high-contrast ikat would bring those babies right up to date.. White would work good with chevron or ikat too, but I like the gold I think, the more I write it, the more I like the gold :) SO hot with a bold graphic. Oh can't wait to see them done!

    ReplyDelete
  35. JULIE: Interesting....I didnt even think of keeping the gold and adding a bold fabric....hmmm I bet it would look nice! I dont hate the gold, it's just not my preference. But sometimes unless we try something - we dont know.
Thank you for the idea...this will be hard!

    ReplyDelete
  36. no no no ....leave them gold!!! lol ...I'm so into gold lately ..thus my golden tree stumps!!! They're fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I say paint the cane silver, paint the wood white & change the fabric to a black w/ silver design of some sort! Just an idea...

    ReplyDelete
  38. ONE word: FABULOUS!! I would have purchased those chairs too! Love love love what you did with them!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would paint them white with probably a lovely navy velvet for the cushions. Perhaps silver upholstery tacks? Delicious.

  40. MRS JOSEPH:
Oh that sounds beautiful, thank you!
The hard part will be deciding!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Considering the pictures that I have seen of your home, I would say to paint the chairs either white or maybe a pale robin's egg blue and then some beautiful/modern Designer's Guild fabric on the seats(I think that SO many of their fabrics are pure genius that I don't even know which one)!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm going out on a limb, but I think the new ones would look awesome painted black with a burlap, canvas fabric and distress edge with gold showing through and then do the same with the legs of the table.....I love black on furniture so I am a little black biased....Can't wait to see the big reveal...
Can't help you with what to do with the old ones maybe sell them on Ebay;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, Jen, they're gorgeous!!

I think matte charcoal with a perfect finish could be a very interesting alternative... And of course with a geometric/abstract pattern.

Marimekko actually has some pretty interesting patterns these days... (Keiserinna is gorgeous, but not abstract..)

  44. The gold is pretty cool too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am all for keeping them as they are! Gold! I think it would look great in your current space because of that large gold frame above the dining table

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm a fan of the gold...but if your keeping your table white seems to work best.
and I'm a sucker for the vibrant turquoise generally used to don the chairs during that era.

  50. Keep the caning! the frames look a bit shiny, perhaps just a bit of antiquing with some black paint to burnish up that gold? So gorgeous - they really do deserve a new table :) one change always leads to another..

Just have to comment (my first time ever!). Love your blog and excited for you re: those great chairs. My first thought is royal purple verging on black, keep the cane back b/c it's so unique. Add a big graphic organic print to keep things casual yet chic.

LOVE your blog and may be emailing you for advice....I'm a newbie blogger.

  63. Ok I promise this is my last comment about these chairs hahaha. But your slim gold picture frame would works so well with the slim gold chair frames! Like the frames and chairs are having a mini conversation.

  64. I agree with Tassia- turquoise seats and painted black or white...
    They are astonishing!!!

    Good luck with your decision!
