REAL LIFE: OUR (TOO LONG) RV TRIP

Traveling with my family last week was not easy.  I'll be the first to tell you that being in such a small space with my husband (for too long) is not always a good idea.  I love him, but damn.... we can get on each others' nerves in such tight quarters!  I also discovered on this trip that RV'ing (as they call it) just isn't for me.  I guess I'm more of a city girl who likes to dress chic & sip on cappuccinos.... I ADMIT IT.

Nonetheless, I decided to go because I thought it would be a good idea to experience the back roads, farms, fruit markets and the beautiful animals we don't see in the city.  I guess you could say, I wanted to be rugged for a bit.  On this trip, I realized I'm too much of a city-girl to go rugged more than 4 days. Our trip went for 9 days. Tooo long.

In the meanwhile, we also traveled with our 7 1/2 month old son.  He wasn't a handful, he was ACTUALLY two.  We had to make stops every time he was to be fed & changed. To be fair, he has a good temperament and isn't a huge crybaby but he certainly got irritated being in the car seat too long.  Car seats are wonderful & horrible at the same time, right?  Because he's still under 2 yrs old,  he has to face towards the back of the vehicle, so he doesn't get to see much out the window. Like a friend told me recently, when you take kids with you, it's no longer a vacation but a trip.  Don't get me wrong, I thank God for the time off, but hoping for a vacation next time.

All in all, the sights I saw were as beautiful as any movie & the places we visited were SUPER fun. I learned a few things along the way, if you decide to  travel in an RV + baby, it will require a few things:

  • patience
  • a good amount of baby clothes
  • if you're traveling in the cold, pack warm attire
  • Organic baby food to-go like Ella's Kitchen or Happy Baby
  • portable baby tub like Puj - that folds & hangs to dry easily
  • a comfy car seat that is easy to remove like the nuna PIPA
  •  Pre-fill bottles with water or pedialyte to carry around if you're child is thirsty
  •  Do not plan too much, because trust me, most of the trip will be spontaneous and you may be disappointed.
  • have lots of possible destinations as back ups, in case plan A fails.
  • download cartoons or kids learning videos on an ipad or whatever for your child to watch during his/her traveling time in the car seat.
  • always charge phones, iPad, etc.
  • With an RV it's better to opt for plastic dinnerware because renting the ceramic dishes etc. like we did, wasn't a good idea. Why? because with every bump all you could hear are dishes & I was fearing the cabinets opening. Although the dishes are in a safety box, still...it was annoying for the baby to hear as he slept.
  • bring plenty of bottled water for everyone - which baby can also drink from.
  • Forget bringing your entire wardrobe. Almost all RV parks have laundry & while you are there you can do a quick load.
  • if it's cold, I'd suggest bringing a small portable heater. You never know when you may need it.
  • stay organized, put things in specific places so you don't spend most of your trip wondering where you're shoes are etc.
  • Do not overeat. Not for anything but... being on the road too long with a baby you will be sitting around a lot. The kitchen should be used to cook meals. We used it almost every single night.
  • We decided to cover the cloth RV seats with towels we bought at a Walmart after i spilled some water on one section then sat down on it. Got up to discover i had a dark spot on my jeans from the dirt that collects on the RV cushions. Gross. So, cover those things up! This is perfect when you have to place some baby items on the seats.
  • Use the main RV bed as the baby changing station. But make sure to never leave your infant alone!

Our Royal Caribbean Cruise Vacation

I've always been wary of cruises.

The idea of being out in the middle of the ocean PETRIFIED me.  However, when Royal Caribbean said they would sponsor a trip to Cozumel, Mexico, I stopped to re-think.  I figured if thousands of people sail each day, why not me? To play it safe, we agreed to only do (4) nights instead of seven, just in case we didn't enjoy it.

So I told my husband all the details & before you know it, we were off to Ft. Lauderdale where we boarded the Vision Of The Seas ship. This is a relatively BIG ship, so we were excited!

This is the 1st photo I shot of the ship as we walked toward the check-in area.  It was like a dream come true seeing the actual ship in person,  it was MASSIVE.  When we boarded, they directed us to our balcony stateroom - Oui, monsieur...... which was toward the front of the ship on the 7th floor.   A balcony room is the way to go – the view is breathtaking all hours of the day....if you don't get a balcony, most rooms will tend to have a tiny porthole, or no windows at all.  I'm claustrophobic, so that doesn't fly with me! NO WAY.

As the ship took off, the land seemed to get smaller & more distant; it was very surreal, since I'd never been in the middle of the ocean with water surrounding me on all 4 sides.  It was a lovely cruise with lots of food, entertainment, and plenty of interesting activities to get involved in or watch. We sat down for a FREE comedy show one night and that was really fun.  Most of the cruise was spent either sunbathing, or just relaxing in our room.  There are 3 meals a day served, either to your room or in the main dining area + 1 housekeeper for each room, so your room is always clean.....keep reading below....

When we finally got into our state room, they had this beautiful fruit salad waiting for us - and look at our prvate balcony, so beautiful and serene.

I immediately took a shower & put on my robe - loved the cute little bathroom. All stocked up like any luxury hotel, with fancy shampoos, conditioners & lotions!  It was a small bathroom with a shower, but still very comfortable with lots of shelf space for our toiletries. That was a plus since I tend to travel with lots of toiletries. My husband always asks "do you need all that?" - My response, "Ummmmmmm, yeaaa"

We spent the Fourth of July on the ship, and even though we didn't see fireworks, there were plenty of events.  After a delicious formal dinner there was a beautiful red, white & blue balloon drop in the atrium, super cute!  The sunset was amazing that night too. In case you shoe-addicts are wondering, my shoes are from ShoeMint & my dress is from Mango.

The next day was gorgeous, blue skies all around us......if felt as if the sky never ended. God's presence was certainly bountiful.

Because it was so windy, I ended up having to braid my hair.  I used this really cool product by Oscar Blandi called 'Braid Paste', which helps keep braids neat.

This was the main dining hall, with a ton of huge round windows running on each side of the ship....and lots of amazing views. We also had a chance to try out the three specialty restaurants (check out my Instagram for lots of pics) - I really liked the ambiance at the Asian spot, Izumi, but Mat was especially fond of the steakhouse, Chops Grille (thanks to Franz, the Hotel Director, for the recommendations). They even had lots of gluten-free and dairy-free options....perfect for me.

Thanks to Triangl Swimwear for these amazing neoprene swimsuits.  LOVE them!

Good morning! This was probably one of the most AMAZING breakfasts we've ever had....because of the beautiful view.  Don't you agree?

We stopped to enjoy Cozumel, Mexico for the day - It was beautiful & probably the hottest place I've been in a long time. The humidity was SO thick - so when we arrived back to NYC humidity, we weren't complaining.

The sunsets were also a favorite of ours, it was very romantic and unlike any other sunset.

After that experience, you can bet we will be taking another cruise again! And definitely the experience aboard Royal Caribbean was really top-notch...the crew was so friendly & helpful, and there's so many choices of ships, locations and activities. Best of all, there's something for everyone to do – eat, spa, sunbathe, swim, exercise, sight-see, gamble, or just relax – and no shortage of it. Thank you RC.

VACATION PHOTOS

Good morning! We recently went on a road-trip VACATION to Washington D.C. & Philly.  I'm a chicken when it comes to flying, so road trips are super ideal. For this trip, Nissan provided us with a 1-week loan of the 2014 Versa Note in addition to a $500 gift card to explore our passions & things we love to do the most.

We took a ton of photos - but I'm going to post a few before you actually get sick of it all, ha!
The first few days we drove to D.C- & it was my favorite part of the trip. Seeing the historic sites - the White House, the Capitol & the Lincoln Memorial all for the very first time.  D.C. was a very clean city overall & we loved the architecture of the buildings.

Above is my husband sitting in the Nissan VersaNote in front of the capitol building - I love that this car was our door to more during this trip!

Our hotel, The Westin Washington DC City Center was fantastic, with great service & attention to detail. Their continental breakfast was top-notch too, with some amazing Eggs Benedict.  They also had a state-of-the-art gym facility where my husband & I worked out during our stay. We'd love to stay there again during our next visit because it was such a great central location. I took advantage of the room service breakfast & ordered almost everyday we were there. At one point, it was my husband's birthday & I asked them to sign a card & deliver it with the food, & they did.  Loved that!! The room we stayed in was spacious and clean & the hotel was pretty quiet & relaxing.

While in D.C. I also explored one of my fave things to do, getting pampered at a spa. Thanks To Nissan, I got to spend some time at the Paris Alexander Day Spa - with a long hot stone massage by Tammy.  If you've never had one, you have to. So GOOD.

While driving around the city, parking was super easy. D.C.  has a COOL parking system where you can pay at the meter directly from your mobile phone. HOW? By simply downloading a free app called ParkMobile. We don't have this in NYC (that I know of) - so we were blown away at how easy & convenient it was to park with this app. We could pay directly through the app and input the amount of time we wanted to park for. Let's say we were in the museum & the meter was about to expire, the app would notify us through my iPhone & we would just add more time & money directly through our phone.  You don't even have to rush back to your car! Brilliant. Please NYC do this!

Parking was also made easy with the Nissan VersaNote - the car has a cool technology feature called Around View® Monitor.  It uses four small superwide-angle cameras mounted on the front, side and rear of the car which provide a virtual 360° view of objects around the vehicle, with selectable split-screen close-ups of the front, rear and curb views, helping us get into tight parking spots.

I love this pic of my husband getting the car from the hotel valet  - the car appears small & compact but when you look inside, it's quite spacious.

Went to the Lincoln memorial,  museums, then some shopping in Georgetown at Intermix.

Breakfast in the hotel Westin Hotel room - one of my fave things!

Had to eat at one of the MANY lunch trucks in D.C. as well as head over to get gluten & dairy free cupcakes at Sticky Fingers Bakery.

After our D.C. trip, we headed toward Philly in the VersaNote & it was a smooth & quiet ride. You can't hear a lot of the outside traffic noise, which we loved.  The car was extremely roomy and the back seat could be pushed forward creating a large flat back area - perfect for luggage.  On our way to Philly we stopped at a few Starbucks locations. As many of you know I'm a BIG coffee fan & Nissan gifted us a nice Starbucks card which we used on the trip!

We arrived at the Hotel Monaco in Philly, which was super cute. I loved it!  They really paid attention to the details of the room. The view was gorgeous as well - with lots of greenery outside our windows. Check out the mirrored headboard - so chic. I have to say, the lobby was the most impressive, with a beautiful pink wall lined with hanging brushes and carpeting to die for, looked like a gigantic Franz Kline painting!

The blue velvet Chesterfield sofa in the lobby - how amazing right?

Check out the funky leopard bathrobe they had for the guests along with the bright yellow doors.

The lovely view from our hotel window while I had breakfast.

While in Philly - we decided to officially celebrate Mat's Birthday. We went to dinner at Alma De Cuba  - this was a modern Latin cuisine & by far OUR fave restaurant while on our trip. We enjoyed some lovely dishes as well as a gorgeous chocolate cigar dessert - which I surprised him with.

Thankfully we were able to get around without using a map because the NissanVersa note had a built in GPS system which we used for the entire trip. So handy.  This car is definitely on our list, if we end up buying another car. It gets great mileage - 40 MPG on the interstate, so we only had to fill the tank once and it's only $13,990 - super affordable.

My Review of The Marcel in NYC...

Many of you had asked me about my hotel stay in NYC this past month. Well, I thought I'd write a mini- review about what the experience was like staying at The Marcel at Gramercy.

The minute we arrived we were greeted nicely & they took care of us immediately by showing us around. The lobby was super chic with plenty of room to sit down & relax.

We had a king size bed & a pretty decent room on the 8th floor with a view of 24th street. The staff was super nice & very helpful - so no complaints.

They showed us around & took us the the 10th floor lounge which had an outdoor terrace - amazing!  The inside lounge area was full of windows & very spacious!  Get this, the outdoor terrace had a clear view of the EMPIRE STATE building!

As for the room decor.... it was pretty unique with a super tall headboard & a clean & modern bathroom.

One of my favorite things about the bathroom was it provided enough shelving space for all my toiletries.... which is a must whenever I travel!

All in all, the manager & staff were very pleasant - I would definitely recommend this hotel - but if you're all about having a spacious stay, ask for a KING room!

Our room was 809, but we'll be happy to lend it to you. Ha! Just kidding!!

Are you thinking of visiting NYC anytime soon?? Where will you be staying?
