Food: Pistachio Cranberry Cheese Log

Hello again! It's Fallon of Sage + Sparkle here, to share with you one of my favorite (super easy) appetizers that you can prepare for any holiday soiree.

In total it takes a bout 4 hours to make but the actual time you will spend on it, is very minimal. The longest part is just letting it sit in fridge. Easy enough, right?! I don't know about you, but for me the holidays are a whirlwind, I feel like they are over before they even start... so easy is a must! The original recipe was adapted from good ol' Martha, however see below for the slight changes/additions I made.

cheese-holiday-appetizer
 Ingredients:
  • 1 bar (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup coarsely grated sharp white cheddar (4 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Sea salt and ground pepper
  • 1 cup shelled unsalted pistachios, chopped
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • Assorted crackers, for serving
Directions:
  • In a medium bowl, mix cream cheese, cheddar, dijon, and worcestershire until well combined; season with salt and pepper. (TIP: I used my bullet to make sure everything was mixed perfectly)
  • Cover then refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours.
  • Toast pistachios over medium heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant and golden, about 7 minutes; set aside and let cool
  • Once cooled mix in bowl with dried cranberries
  • Transfer cheese mixture to a piece of waxed or parchment paper; using paper, shape into a 6" long log. Roll in pistachio/cranberrie mixture, pressing them firmly to adhere.
  • Wrap log in a fresh piece of waxed or parchment paper and place back into refrigerator for additional 1 to 2 hours (or up to 1 day) to firm.
  • Serve with crackers.

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a great Christmas!! Now it's that time to finish the year off with a big bang – and a fabulous one at that! It's time to welcome 2014 with open arms and all the glitter and glam a girl could possibly wear (it's more than okay to go all out on New Year's!)

I really LOVE the green dress from ASOS below! So many options....  I've selected a few favorites that caught my eye in my online search....

FASHION: TUXEDO JACKET

Hi everyone! Adri here of Adri's World. Hope you have been enjoying this holiday season! Are you ready for the New Year? I love the idea of a new beginning and also the celebration that comes with it.  Obviously, any good party deserves a great outfit and you can never go wrong with the tuxedo jacket. What I love about a tuxedo jacket is the sleek look it creates. I have one, and I've worn it many times in many different ways.

The important part of styling a tuxedo jacket is to keep the look feminine, so adding the right jewelry, color and of course some heels are the perfect way to wear it.  Here are two styling options for your upcoming parties. For a dinner party, you can keep the look a bit more casual by wearing a skirt and shirt with a great necklace and for a cocktail party a dress would look great and chic with a statement necklace and colored pumps.

The possibilities are endless, and when the holidays are over you can also wear it with your favorite jeans.

Do you like the look of a tuxedo jacket? How would you wear it?

FOOD: MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE

Hi everyone! Lauren from Perpetually Chic, dropping in this month with a twist on a winter classic. With an early snowfall in many areas and frigid temps, there's nothing better than cozying up inside near the fire with a warm cup of hot chocolate. This Mexican Hot Chocolate is a take on a family favorite from growing up. Rich and creamy hot chocolate gets an unexpected, but oh-so-delicious spike from a dash of chili powder, cayenne, and cinnamon. Keep reading for the details!

Mexican Hot Chocolate | Perpetually Chic for Made By GirlMexican Hot Chocolate | Perpetually Chic for Made By Girl

Seriously--you'll be putting your can of hot cocoa mix away after trying this recipe, because making it from scratch on the stove is surprisingly easy. And you can adjust the spices to your preference, whether you want a subtle hint or a more flavorful kick. For the whipping cream, I like to add that little extra indulgence but not overdo it--I just add a small dollop to top off each cup, letting it immediately melt right into the cocoa.

Mexican Hot Chocolate | Perpetually Chic for Made By GirlMexican Hot Chocolate | Perpetually Chic for Made By Girl

Mexican Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
4 cups 2% milk
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup sugar
2 ounces of bittersweet chocolate, broken into pieces
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 cinnamon sticks, plus more for serving
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
dash of chili powder

Instructions:
Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium high heat. Bring to a simmer, then add the cocoa powder, sugar, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, cayenne and chili powder. Whisk until well combined. Cook until mixture is fully warmed, about 2 minutes. Whisk again just before serving. In a chilled metal bowl, combine whipping cream, sugar and cinnamon. Whisk with a hand blender on high speed until peaks form, about 1-2 minutes. Ladle the hot chocolate into cups, top with a dollop of whipping cream, sprinkle with a dash of chili powder, and garnish with cinnamon sticks.

DIY: Cappuccino Heart Stencil

I've been on a major coffee kick - because I now have a Nespresso Machine in my office - thanks to Nespresso who gifted this gorgeous machine to me for Christmas! So grateful!

Speaking of coffee, I decided to get creative today & create an easy DIY heart stencil for your next cup of cappuccino.  This is a creative way to bring a SMILE to anyone's face this Holiday!  It's like 1-2-3 .......that easy, so here we go!

Step 1: Fold a piece of paper in half, then using a scissor, cut a heart shape on the folded end like I did above. You are going to use the cut out - not the heart.  So don't worry too much about the heart shape at this point, just throw that part away.  The cut-out you can be perfected by using your scissor & making it more shapely if you wish.  Make it pretty because... that will end up being your stencil.

Step 2: So, here it is below, my heart stencil!  It's exactly the shape I want it - so now we can bring on the coffee & the cocoa powder.  I'm using Nespresso coffee for this project along with Scharffenberger sweetened cocoa powder.  You can use un-sweetned too, doesn't matter.

Step 3: I then take my heart stencil & place it over the cup of foamy cappuccino & while holding it with one hand, I sprinkle the cocoa powder all over it, making it nice & dark!  Best to use a shaker tin so the powder comes out slowly & even.

Remove the stencil carefully & ta da!!! There you have it - a beautiful heart cappuccino!! Neat huh?

A Tasteful Holiday Season

The folks at Nespresso asked me to share what “A Tasteful Holiday Season” means to me, so here it goes.

Ever since I could remember, I wanted a Cappuccino/Espresso machine - but the high prices & the fear of cleaning the machine kept me away from purchasing one.  I didn't want to spend that long cleaning it after every cup of coffee - I just wanted what ever coffeemaker I got to be quick & easy - leaving time for relaxation.  Know what I mean?

Nespresso changed this.

I have to say, Nespresso is now my favorite coffee & their espresso maker is at the top of my list.  So,  I now have two machines, one for my kitchen & another for my office.  Every time we have guests over, we offer them coffee & they're always impressed at how frothy & high quality the coffee is. Quick tip: Using Soy milk creates the best froth, trust me.

Every year, we have friends over a few days before Christmas. People share stories on what they plan to do for the New Year & gifts they're planning on giving & so on. It's a wonderful time to catch up and be reminded of what's important – the love of friends and family and joys of spending time with them! It's also always so great to hear of different holiday traditions, and I look forward to these gatherings every year.

We usually spend this time chatting over hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, but this year, we want to aim toward a more cozy, tasteful holiday gathering. And so, we're changing things up & celebrating with coffee & desserts.  I want them all to experience the taste of the Nespresso coffee.  For me,  I no longer feel the need to go out & buy coffee - it's so relaxing to sit at home, read a book, watch a movie or just work with coffee steps away!  Very convenient.  My husband & I are super excited & looking forward to the holiday..... the wonderful parties to attend, lots of good food, gifts, and great coffee! Unlike the espresso machines I had thought about getting in the past, the Nespresso machine is easy-to-clean & the cappuccino is made super fast! Can't wait to get this gathering started!
Because I can't stop RAVING about this machine.....Nespresso has partnered up with Made By Girl to giveaway a Pixie Aluminum ($229) and Aeroccino + ($99) to (1) lucky coffee lover! Stay tuned for the giveaway info!

BEAUTY: 5 Facial Oils

Hello everyone! Kelsey from Kelsey Nicole here again. Winter seems to be officially here and weather in Maryland has been awfully cold the last few days. One of my favorite things to do when I get home from running around in the cold all day, besides putting on warm pajamas, is wash my face and put on facial oil. Facial oil is quickly absorbed and provides numerous benefits to dry skin. Here are a few of my favorites:

FOOD: Buttermilk Biscuits

Hello, MBG readers! Fallon of Sage + Sparkle here again to share with you one of my favorite recipes, Buttermilk Biscuits. There is something about fresh-baked biscuits that instantly warms your soul... at least it works that way for me. Homemade biscuits are one of those things that few make, for fear that it may require too much time, but in reality they are super easy to make and taste so delicious! These are perfect after spending all day in this cold NYC weather. homemade-biscuits_fallon-carmichael_sage+sparkle   Ingredients: (Makes 10 biscuits)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 Tablespoons + 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 6 Tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 6 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Directions: (recipe adapted via Clinton Street Bakery, Martha Stewart)
  • Combine flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar in a large bowl
  • In a medium bowl mix together shortening and butter; add flour mixture and mix together until the dough starts to crumble; add buttermilk and stir
  • Dust small baking sheet with flour. Press dough out to cover baking sheet, using a rolling-pin (tip: any canned item will also work if you don't have a rolling-pin)
  • Cover dough and place in refrigerator for 20 minutes
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees; line a new baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Cut biscuit shapes (I used a water glass, but any circle shape or biscuit cutter will do)
  • Place biscuits on baking sheet and bake approx. 18 minutes
  • Best served warm (tip: if you only plan to eat a few, freeze the rest and bake at a later time)

FASHION: GLAMOUR & SHINE

Hi everyone! Adri here of Adri's World. The cold has definitely began here in NYC and the feeling of holidays is all around us! One way to celebrate is to dress up in style.
I love to add a bit of shine and glamour to any outfit and the holidays are the perfect time, don't you think? A sequin sweater in black will dress up any outfit. Pair it with a skirt for a more dressed up look, or with jeans and heels for a casual yet chic look.

A great way to add shine is with shoes, and these two options are great if you want a mid heel or a high heel shimmer! And of course jewelry is always in style, so adding glamour with a bold necklace or a cocktail ring is a must this season. Or maybe you just want a bit of shine with details? How about a festive sequined clutch and some glittery nails. Love!

Do you plan to add some glamour and shine to this holiday season?

BEAUTY: PLAITES + PONIES

Hey girls, Kimberly here and I'm currently trying to source some beauty inspiration for the upcoming Spring 2014 season that will be upon us before we know it! And upon doing so, I couldn't help but to take notice of a couple of trends that seemed to dominate the runways (whether bedazzled or woven): Plaits and Ponies. Pictured Above: Mara Hoffman, Spring 2014 // Beleza Extraordinaria // Verão 2013 - SPFW // CZAR Cesar Galindo's Spring/Summer 2014

No matter the length of your mane anyone can pull off a braided or pulled up 'do. But the essentials for doing so successfully, remain the same. You'll need a few hair pins, a couple of hair ties, a serum of your choice, brush and combs that'll pull the entire look together, and a unique accessory to add a little flair to the otherwise traditional 'do. Some of my favorite hair'cessories are pictured below. One thing I love about this plait and pony trend is it's effortless ability to transition from Fall to Spring! It's all in the way you execute it! For fall, I'll be rocking this trend with bold brows and bold lips whereas for Spring I'll be playing up neutral lips, maintaining dewy skin, and making sure to flaunt bronzed cheek bones!
