I can honestly say I wasn't that MUCH into Aboriginal paintings until Viv from Ish & Chi posted a question on Twitter asking if she should buy a particular painting.
Of course, me being curious and LOVING art...I clicked on it! It was an authentic aboriginal by well-known artist, Jeannie Mills Pwerle. Viv was uncertain if she should BUY that particular piece because it was $450 and she may not be able to get the bike she wanted until later on! I told her if she really wanted the bike she should wait, but I guess she wanted the ART a lot more! Good choice, it's what I would've done.
I'm such a SUCKER for art! I was pretty inspired by Viv's "just go for it" attitude and decided to hunt down an authentic Jeannie Mills Pwerle painting for my own home.
I FINALLY found this one (above), it's a 60 x 90 cm, I purchased it & had it shipped to me from Utopia!
Aboriginal art is based upon traditional culture and is made by Indigenous Australians. The works they cover vary from painting on leaves, sculptures, rock carvings and more.
I really love the colors of this painting & I'm so glad I decided to invest in this piece! In fact, I was so HAPPY with it that I decided to buy a LARGER painting by another well-known aboriginal artist named, Janet Golder Ngwarai-Kngwarreye which measures 152 x 90 cms.
Now this is what I call, being INSPIRED.....
Do you own any aboriginal art? By what artists?
art by jeannie mills pwerle
This is beautiful! I'm not familiar with aboriginal art, though my mom is Australian so I was very interested to read your post! I'm now going to have to look into this more :) Can't wait to see where you hang it.

I love aboriginal art! I don't own any because I have never found any I could afford. Check old issues of Vogue Living Australia and you will find tons of amazing aboriginal art. I actually did a project on it in school and it was really fun!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Such vibrant colors. I love that it is such a unique piece. I've always wanted to acquire some 'real' art. Good for you! xo
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I loooove the colors in the painting. I can't wait to see where you hand this great piece!
ReplyDeleteWow! I have never seen anything like it! It would go great in your new dining room! It's a great inspiration for my own paintings!
ReplyDeleteLike you I had original not really 'felt' aboriginal art, however lately I have seen a lot more pieces that I really like out there and have been considering a piece for my home! :) Hazel
ReplyDeleteThanks for supporting Indigenous Australian art! Art work sales contribute a huge amount financially to Indigenous communities, and it's really wonderful that someone on the other side of the world has chosen a piece by Jeannie Mills Pwerle to add to their collection. :)
ReplyDeleteHAZEL: Me too! I know what you mean....I am in the process of obtaining more paintings , just for variety as well as investment pieces. you never know! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous! My hubby and I traveled to Australia last year but only came back with some prints - nothing original. Would love to one day have an original!! Yours is just beautiful
ReplyDeleteI like this one. It's different from what you normally come across. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteLOVELY piece of Art Jen!
ReplyDeleteBeing an Australian, I see a lot of Aboriginal Art & am exposed to the culture a lot. I'm a Primary School Teacher and always enjoy teaching my kids about the Aboriginal Culture & we have lots of fun doing replica 'dot' paintings & reading 'dreamtime' stories :)

Hi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI was with you- I really wasn't that interested in Aboriginal Art until recently. I think because the stuff I had seen was all in tourist shops and very old fashioned. That was until I stumbled into an exhibition opening at Dank Street Gallery by Chris Edwards. The pictures were amazing and vibrant- we were lucky enough to have him take us around and explain his work and it was a complete eye opener. He is so intelligent and passionate and it comes out in his work. I would have bought nearly all of them but couldn't afford the price tag!
Check him out: http://www.wirriimbidesigns.com/index.html

Love your find Jen, its a really nice piece. Most of the paintings are all specific to a different "tribe" if you will aswell so its something that means something specific to that community and the style is generally specific also.
ReplyDelete....It is hard to cut through all the touristy stuff sometimes and find the real art.
CAM: Oh thanks! I'll check him out! :)
ReplyDeleteCLAIRE@SCISSORS PAPER ROCK: That's great that you teach them aboriginal art...and that they even try to paint in that style. :))) It really opens their minds to other cultures..!
ReplyDeleteONE SYDNEY ROAD: Thank you! oxox
ReplyDeleteyes you should...I lived in the Kimberley region (Western Australia) and aboriginal art is beautiful!! also the aboriginal people are amazing very caring and family oriented. Their art has a lot of meaning and very symbolic. A very valuable purchase.
ReplyDeleteI love this that you chose! It's so beautiful. I don't know very much about Aboriginal art, but know I need to see more!! Thanks for passing by today, I always appreciate it :)

Oh Jen it arrived! It is beautiful. It is so wonderful that you like her work as much as I do and thank you for the sweet mention.
ReplyDeleteMine arrived too. It is even more beautiful in person isn't it?
PS: The bike sold out in the colour I was after and is on backorder until November so I couldn't have bought it even if I wanted to. A blessing in disguise perhaps?
Hope you'll share photos of it hanging in your home with us xx
Oh stunning! Love!
ReplyDeleteI was not familiar with aboriginal art....that piece is beautiful that you purchased! I'm sure it will look GREAT where ever you decide to place it.

This is so beautiful. I don't own any aboriginal art but have done a bit of study on it before. Have you seen scarf that Hermes commissioned Aboriginal artist Gloria Petyarre for their SS09 collection? So beautiful and would look gorgeous framed on a wall.
ReplyDeleteThat painting is gorgeous. Love it because it's so unique.
ReplyDeleteAboriginal refers to a country's indigenous peoples. So Aboriginal art in Canada means the artists are First Nations, Inuit or MetÃs.
WOW! Not only do I flat out love your painting...and this whole social media story...but I just learned something! very cool...thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteSARAH: wow, no I didnt see that. That would be nice to check out. I bet its gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove the colors! Totally unfamiliar with this type of art - but I'm really loving it!
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, I have a google alert set for artist Jeannie Mills and came across your fantastic blog. I work with Jeannie in Alice Springs Australia and she's like family to me. I love that you love her and her work too, and I particulary enjoy reading so many great comments from everyone as well. I intend on passing them all on to Jeannie.
ReplyDeleteMy art gallery has a blog and I mention Jeannie Mills wherever I can so feel free to have a read (at 'Australian Aboriginal Art'). Thanks for your post. :)
