I've been on another CRAZE, trying to figure out what we'll be adding next to our main dining room table. A credenza? A sideboard? WHATEVER you want to call it, we haven't found it! After looking through several sites & realizing we weren't going to find something long enough & affordable - we came to a conclusion........
let's freakin' try IKEA.
let's freakin' try IKEA.
During my hunt, I had come across a shelf in this Greektown loft on Apartment Therapy. I was impressed at how brilliantly Andreas (the owner) used the Akurum shelving system - and thought, why not? I love a floating cabinet...
We've made the order through a company called MODERNLV - They actually pick up your IKEA furniture for you for about 20% of the total cost. Basically - it's cheaper than ordering it online & maybe even driving there yourself.
Now, I'm speaking for those of US who DO NOT have an IKEA in our state...like Nevada. So lame. Anyway, it's ordered & I'm looking forward to showing you what it looks like up.
As for my plan...I bought enough shelving so that it would extend about 2 feet passed the painting on each side.
Do you think that was a smart move on my behalf? Or should I have extended the cabinets from wall to wall instead??
Have you ever installed floating cabinets before in your home??
below: our place - shot this picture while standing in the kitchen.
For those of you interested - here's a cool DIY on how to install a floating IKEA cabinets.

No, but dang now I kinda wanna!
ReplyDeleteSnap! We also have an alcove wall we are looking to install floating shelves in. Yup we are also in an IKEA-less place. Our joiner friend will finish ours short of the end walls. I was unsure but now I have read your post (and everything you do is fab), I would say we may be right on the money! Good luck Jen!

ReplyDeleteI also love this colorful floating sideboard/Fauxdenza made of IKEA Ivar cabinets I blogged some time ago: http://www.frauhaselmayer.com/2011/08/diy-colorfoul-ikea-sideboard-aka.html

It will look fantastic in your space!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I can see the floating shelves really working in that space. Looking forward to seeing them after the install.
ReplyDeleteI think you have the right idea...taking the shelves end to end would make it look too much like office file cabinets...Check out this blog www.the-brick-house.com...she is also using floating shelves...just a little more inspiration...
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me the grey you used on your wall. I really like it.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No Ikea? That isn't fair. I love what you are going to do, sounds fanastic!
ReplyDeleteSMILESFROMSTILACOOM:The walls in my house are actually white...a paint called cielo blanco by frazee paints. :)

I bet you've answered this before...but I wondered if you could tell me what paint color you've got on your walls here in the kitchen? do you love it?
ReplyDeleteIt'll look great - good old IKEA, can't beat it ;)
ReplyDeleteHiya lovely! From what you have described and from the pics above, it sounds as though you have purchased the same Ikea ones we had in our apartment in KL! You never got to see them in the pics of our place but they look great and have plenty of storage place! Can't wait to see what they look like in your space! x
ReplyDeleteI think it is going to look fabulous! I never knew they didn't have an Ikea in Nevada...I'm so surprised!
ReplyDeleteI think the floating shelves will look great there! Can't wait to see the results!
ReplyDeleteYou've made me "home sick," Jen. My husband and I lived in Switzerland for two years and totally furnished our three bedroom flat with accessory furniture, dining table & chairs, kitchenware from Ikea. (Talk about eclectic...we married it with a 3-piece Italian leather, deep green couch, love seat and over-sized chair we bought somewhere else! It worked wonderfully!)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my Swiss staff could not believe we drove so far (50 miles away) to shop. But we loved Ikea. Sometimes on a rainy day, it was a destination, fun day's outing, place for lunch, etc.
Love your floating shelves idea. Will follow your progress.
Love, love it! I think you could go either way on the length but I probably favor the two feet extension past the picture as well...can't wait to see your photos. It's perfect!
ReplyDeleteI think 2 feet is good :) So cool you found a company to deliver Ikea to you, I also do not have one near me. I bought the Ikea trosslsta sideboard and LOVE it, their furniture is actually pretty good quality, Can't wait to see the finished look! xx-Jackie
ReplyDeleteIlike very much your blog!!!!!!!!!!

GGP: We also drove to California (before we had heard of modernlv) just to get some stuff from IKEA...SO i know what you mean.
ReplyDeleteTIED WITH A BOUW: hey you! Oooh! Do you have any pics? I'd love to see what it looked like! :)))
ReplyDeleteI love the floating sideboard, if we weren't renting I'd totally do it. Here's the link to the brick house's installation:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.the-brick-house.com/2011/08/fauxdenza/
They added some gorgeous stained wood to the top to make it look less ikea and more custom.
I love that look, Jen! Great choice!!!
ReplyDeleteHiya Jen, I have had a look through my photo files and unfortunately I don't thing I do... sorry :( It was one part of the room that I never really photographed as we had our big plasma mounted above the floating unit therefore not the best subject matter. I think TV's can be a bit of an eye sore and it's proving to be a bit of a problem in the new place. I'll keep you posted! xoxo
ReplyDeleteTIED WITH A BOUW: Oh no :( I know what you mean about the tv being an eye soar, thats why i decorated around mine ...i think it looks much better ;)
ReplyDeleteJen, that is a fantastic idea to use the floating credenza! It looks like space you want to put it is close to the table, so by hanging it up off the floor, it doesn't seem so heavy for the room. I am so surprised Nevada doesn't have an Ikea! They have everything else! Luckily for me living in San Diego we have one very close. Which can at times be dangerous :)
