I LOVE decorating but my husband doesn't understand my passion (he'd say obsession) with what will go with what!!?!? I'm certainly NOT an interior designer, so I'm asking designers or non-designers to pls give some quick input on what you think looks best. We no longer have our white french provincial sofa, it was SOLD. Boo hoo.
However, the show must go on & I'm ready to select a new sofa, this one to be exact from Jayson Home & Garden in a velvet fabric. I've already purchased the Madeline Weinrib greek key rug in 8x10" you see below & am keeping the Jonathan Adler lamp as well as the white IKEA floating shelves & white leather daybed (I hope). I'm also bringing with us our white lucite coffee table, I think it will make the space appear spacious because it is clear.
The Dilemma: I have no idea what color fabric to choose for the sofa. What do you think would work well with the rug below?? The rug is a blueish color with off-white Greek key around the edges. Based on the pieces you see below, what color would you select for the sofa?? YES, the python benches will be included in the mix & the sofa will also have a set of bolsters on each side of the arms.
Below are some swatches - any of these colors? or something else???
I'd love to hear your thought!
A charcoal grey would look amazing with the rug. I'd definitely choose a grey over the tan/beige options.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Love charcoal grey!
ReplyDeleteThe passion, obsession, and total kookiness is what I love about you, baby! You know I would love to get the charcoal but I'm just not sure it will flow well with the Weinrib rug. Either way, though, I trust your judgment and look forward to seeing what you come up with :)
ReplyDeleteThe kitchen, however, is mine!
Hey Jen!
ReplyDeleteAre you going with white walls like in the photo? If you are, I would go with a luxurious velvet fabric in a dark, rich colour. Something like a navy blue, or purple, (although I suspect your husband wouldn't be a huge fan of that! hah...)
With white walls and that greek rug it would totally pop!
Can't wait to see photos of what you do with your new place! I love moving so much, purely for the redecorating haha :p
I second the previous posters, grey.
ReplyDeleteI second the previous posters, go with a grey. Classic and modern at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI second the previous posters, grey.
ReplyDeleteI also agree on the charcoal grey, but a deep color like navy would also work well with rug and the python stools. Either way, whatever you choose, I'm sure it'll look great. Good luck on your new place!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last post. Charcoal gray or deep navy. It's like the idea of the black (or dark color) making the others pop...or anchoring them.

ReplyDeleteTESSA: Yes, i'll be keeping the walls white.... :)
ReplyDeleteI say grey or navy. I love they Python stools. - Brandy
ReplyDeleteIm an interior designer and I would do a dark navy velvet...or really dark charcoal grey velvet...i don't love the color that the sofa is in now in the picture...too much taupe undertone
ReplyDeleteGirl love that sofa!
ReplyDeleteI really like the velvet on the left side in the middle...but what about an dusty orange velvet? Yum and gorgeous with those python benches and rug
xoxo

I would go with one of the two fabric choices in your picture, either the camry pebble or the queen buckwheat. Then you can draw on the gold flecks from the fabric and make it rich and luxurious. Those colors would also play well with the gold in the floor lamp and any gold accents you might have in sconces or mirrors.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Do you have the rug? roll it out and look at the samples on the rug so you can see the undertones with the blue :-)
ReplyDeleteI'd go with grey too! I like the swatch on the right (Grid Stone?) as I think it would really make the gorgeous rug pop and blend with your other pieces. Look forward to seeing which one you decide on :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a navy blue velvet. I know that's different from the normal b&w palette that you do (and that I love so much) but I think it would be gorgeous with the rug.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the thought of Navy Blue paired with that rug! On a another note, where did you purchase your gold curtain rods? LOVE! The picture shows them floating from the ceiling. :> :>
ReplyDeleteThe rug is quite dark overall so I personally would go for the lightest colour couch I can. It looks like the rug has beige in the contrast pattern but I have a feeling a very pale, clean grey would be more your style and go much better with white walls and other cool tones!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the Navy Blue paired with the Greek rug!! On another note, eye spy gold curtain rods. Where did you purchase those? I need to know. LOVE! They look like they are floating from the ceiling.
ReplyDeleteEILEEN: yes, i have it, i think i may just do that. It's so hard choosing colors like this.
ReplyDeleteCharcoal would be beautiful. It pairs well with everything, but I absolutely love it next to gold/mustards and black. Such a big change from the white sofa - that's exciting! Good luck with the move!
ReplyDeleteI'm no designer but I can't wait to read all the input. After agonizing over it for months, I went with a neutral linen on mine when I bought. Living in a tiny studio apartment, it had to be special order and then the fabric I picked was discontinued. lol, just my luck. They had another one very similar, but in a higher grade (of course) but all in all, I love my sofa esp since I love so much color. I can change out the pillows, I bought a blue trellis print rug and now I'm on the hunt for curtains. I wasn't going to but with the winter, the place feels cold.
ReplyDeleteLol, sorry, got a little off topic. I can't wait to see what you go with.
I'm an Interior Designer and I would say that you want to go with something either light or dark since the rug is a medium hue and since you already have two large white pieces, I would go with dark. Of the swatches you pictured, I would definitely say Lugano Gray, particularly since it looks like it would pick up the tones in in the python benches. Definitely share when you get it all put together!

Grey all the way! The other colors are to heavy. Can't wait to see how you put everything together. You always do a great job! Funny thing is, for the longest time I thought you were an interior designer when I first started reading you blog way back :)

I'd definitely go with the Lugano grey or if you want light, the bottom sample...creamy color that I can't see the name of. I can't wait to see it all come together!
ReplyDeletePython benches - oh my so amazing! My vote is for the charcoal:)
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel. Choosing a sofa color has so much pressure. Since the rug is like a blue gray I would say go with a gray sofa. I love the idea of a navy sofa in velvet.
ReplyDeleteJen, Your style has read more "light and airy" to me, which I LOVE. My vote would be to go light, but in something that will be forgiving, since I'm sure Darla might be sharing it with you. :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks for the note on my blog. It MADE my day!!

It seems redundant, but I think with all of the light colors a dark deep color would be a great contrast. But also... depending on the light of your new space you could go with a lighter velvet and create a monotone space with accents of bold color from your art work! I think that would be fresh also... Such a hard choice! Can't wait to see what you choose!!
ReplyDeleteCharcoal gray velvet sofa would be so gorgeous with everything else! That sofa is so gorgeous and so are the python benches!! Can't wait to see it all together.

I love the velvet sofa! I'd go for a taupe color.

I love charcoal gray!!
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was navy. But then I thought it would just be too visually "heavy." Then I thought something like Queen Buckwheat in your swatches would be cozy looking and match with everything and anything you have or will ever have in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful sofa! Love it! Like most commenters, I'd go with the dark charcoal grey. You like to use black and white so the grey would bring a nice contrast similar to black. Maybe get a throw or pillows with the blue color of the rug and/or bring out the blue color from one of your paintings. Also, what are you doing for curtains? Will they be black or white or something else? Perhaps the blue from the rug could be in the curtains/drapes. Whatever you decide, it will be beautiful! Your places always are.
ReplyDeleteI like a pale grey - Grid Stone, or Savvy Seasame. I like high contrast, so with the blue rug, go light. Don't worry about matching the python - the skins will work no matter what, and you can incorporate the navy velvets and dark charcoals (that others are suggesting) into your pillows. Blues and charcoals together can be hard because the greys can have green, blue, purple and taupe undertones. So definitely lay the samples on the rug if you can!
ReplyDeleteI can't speak about colour, but I can speak for comfort. The sofa you're about to choose has very high sides, and speaking from expeirence with my own sofa (of high sides), after a time it becomes increasingly uncomfortable as well as posing serious problems if you want to chill out and lie down on it. Seriously, I would be thinking comfort over style! Hope this helps? :) Hx
ReplyDeleteHej :) I would choose the Queen Buckwheat (colour on the top, sorry maybe its not spelled right), because I think this will match the off-white pattern best. Otherwise it could be a bit too much colours... Just a thought. :) Your blog is great! Cant wait to see the result.
ReplyDeleteTake the Queen Buckwheat, it will match the off-white greek pattern best. Otherwise it could be a overload of colours!
ReplyDeleteBtw I love your blog, you are such an inspiration!
rich dark purple gets my vote. regal and delish. also looks super great in velvet because of the texture.....
ReplyDeletecharcoal grey may be the safer option though....cant wait to see some pics
Normally I would go straight for the charcoal grey, but since the rug is quite dark, I would choose the lighter silvery grey on the right. So gorgeous! xx
ReplyDeleteAnna (My Design Ethos)
My post of today is dedicated to your amazing paintings
ReplyDeleteHope you like it
think about it this way: what mood do you want to create in this room? work from there... you obviously had some look in mind when you picked the rug, so just continue on that wavelength :)
ReplyDeleteI really like the Camry Pebble! :) Would look great with the python benches! :)

Fabulously Vintage
Navy!
ReplyDeleteNavy, navy, navy
ReplyDeleteHey is it possible to upload a little floor plan and where you would like to place the items you like
ReplyDeleteThinking in the long term,I wonder if Navy is going to be something you will still like down the road? And judging from my own space I adore contrast and I just don't think that the charcoal is doing that with the rug? Velvet should be sumptuous and beiges or tans just don't do that,if the fabric choice was more linen then I would be all over the tans. I opt for the silvery grey,I just think in the end it's going to show up the blue in the rug so much nicer rather then blend in like the charcoal will! Does the rug come in another color way? Black and white?

In order not to ‘muddy’ the impact of the blue and white of the Greek Key rug –
ReplyDeleteBlack velvet sofa – it needs to make its strong statement but it also must serve to invite the other pieces into the mix;
White LMVDR Day Bed – do not let this piece go – it is nothing short of statement-making – pure poetry;
Make certain to use the python stools – furniture as an art form – the black sofa will serve to pull them into the mix and make the pattern of their statement more individual;
The clear waterfall coffee table and the white console will serve function and bring fluidity to the room;
The black shade of the Jonathan Adler floor lamp will restate the black of the sofa, re-compliment the stools, and bring additional background statement to the room.
As an artist, look at each piece and weigh what it brings to the other pieces. You have a winning formula here – trust yourself! This room will be stunning!
Dawna: that is the trouble I have with navy..but i am still surprised to hear why people chose navy with an already blue rug? I wonder if it looks good?
ReplyDeleteThis is a hard decision to say the least...
DAWNA: P.s. i didnt see it in black and white or else i would've gotten that color... :(
ReplyDeleteI like the color it is in the picture. Works great with the python and the rug. Get some morder floral pillows in oranges and maybe some other geometric fabrics and it would look fab!
ReplyDeleteHey Jen, I think we all want to ask you a lot of things about your work, Style and personal things, i suggest you to make a formspring or a kind of interview :) please let us know in twitter
ReplyDeleteXoxo
ANGIE: im not into form spring - so the answer to that unfortunately will be no....
ReplyDeletei've heard not so great things.
Hey Jen! I'd go for the shiny camry pebble as well! Looks great with the python and the rug in terms of colour, and because of the shine adds interest. And as much as I love it, be very careful with velvet (and with dark colour for that matter) and furry friends. It really is not fun having to clean it all the time..believe me! Also, with the camry pebble you can change your colour mood easily with pillows and throws, without having to buy a new sofa all the time! Good luck on deciding! Hope I've been able to help you a little!
ReplyDeleteI was kinda of suprised with your rug choice ( the color)
ReplyDelete... it seems like your style is revolving, changing or something along the lines... I would go grey. Your other pieces are strong and bold, the couch is your soft spot and I think the grey would be just that... you have great taste I am sure it will be lovely!
Light grey would be perfect!

I don't know if that sofa will be very comfortable to sit on, cuddle and watch TV..? Of course it's nice though, and I like the color of the pic :)
ReplyDeleteUm just a reminder that though you may not be a designer, you certainly don't need one either!!! Everything is seriously to love here. And can I just saying I am DYING over that sofa, serious love right there!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it all come together(ps secretly this is why I love you moving so much!)
xx
I am voting for light gray! Honestly, if you like colors as much as I do and they have other color options, I would pick hot pink/ dusty pink or apple green! That would be fabulous with the navy blue rug!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you ended up picking but I know the results will be stunning!
Have a great weekend, Jen!

Agree with the commenters above. A rich charcoal grey would look awesome as a velvet fabric and it would fit your other furniture. Just make sure it has a blue-ish twist in it (yes grey isn´t grey - you can have it blue-ish or red-ish or green-ish) to work with the rug.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a red-ish charcoal, it will look weird!
happy decorating!!
xo
Hi Jen, the small fabric which I think is labelled #Grid Stone? to the right of the picture would work quite well with both the blueish Greek key rug and python stools.
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, the small fabric which I think is labelled #Grid Stone? to the right of the picture would work quite well with both the blueish Greek key rug and python stones.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely looking beginning, Jen! I love the sheen of the Camry Pebble and think it's a perfect, classic neutral. No doubt it will be stunning, whatever you choose! Can't wait to see more.

I agree with nearly everyone else, Light grey would look amazing! I like that grid stone one, i think it was called.. Good luck!
