Wanted: Super Chic Decor...

Been thinking a lot about how to decorate our new apartment in New York City. It's not that big, only 1000 sq ft. BIG difference leaving my home which is almost 3000 sq ft. Crazy huh?

Well, I'm sure I'm going to post a lot about this adventure & will welcome any design ADVICE from any Interior Designers out there. One apt (so much BIGGER than ours) that I loved, belongs to Cathy Triant Buxton. I love her style & would love my place to be as CHIC...!

She also has a WHITE sofa!!! I've decided to keep mine for now after seeing her apartment....it REALLY inspired me.

Any of you in the middle of moving right now?? Are you just as CRAZED & excited at the same time?

  1. Looks like those built in bookcases are key! You can never have enough built in storage. Good luck!

  2. What gorgeous photos. I really love the leapard print in the living room.
You should definitely invest in a bed with storage underneith to maximize your space. We lived in a tiny apartment once and all that space under the bed was a lifesaver! You could look at flou beds and also ligne roset, the entire matress lifts up like a car hood to find tons of storage underneith. I think you`d like them.

  5. Oh my, were those movable shelves for shoes?! That is amazing! Love the bar cart as well. There's definitely advantages to decorating a small space. You're a lot more limited sometimes, and I think it can actually be easier to make decisions with less options. I'm sure your space will be gorgeous. Can't wait for photos!

My husband already knows he'll be going to Boston and I just pray that I can join him! I've really enjoyed reading all your moving/apartment hunting/OMG what to ditch and what do I save posts.

  10. I have always loved that shoot of her home!! I am also so glad to hear your keeping that sofa, its beautiful! I think 1000 sq ft is a blessing - perfect size, not to small - but you can really make the place luxe without a massive budget. The possibilities are endless. I am really excited to see your place and what you do with it.

  17. I love the over-sized pillows under the coffee table. Great source of inspiration. My husband and I live in a house that's 1000 sq ft and it might feel too small for some people, but it's actually super cozy and perfect for two. And with your style you can make anything look just as chic and fabulous! Have fun and good luck =)

  24. So exciting to be moving to the Big Apple! To be honest... when I have seen your other house I never would have guessed it was not in NYC! I am loving the low ottomans under the coffee table! And you will need to find multi purpose pieces for storage... but you have impeccable taste, so you will have no problems! {hugs}

I love that you are making this move...makes me feel good since I am also thinking of moving into a much smaller place and far far away from home hopefully by end of this year. Can't wait to hear about your adventure.

  29. Jen - I am SO out of the loop. New York? awesome! - I've bought a new place while i was overseas and have come home and moved in. I still have my old place, renting it out - fully furnished. So I'm starting fresh as well! so exciting but so frustrating at the same time. I just want EVERYTHING NOW in the new place, but trying to do it in a calculated and well thought out way. Can't wait to see how you decorate you NY pad x

  30. This apartment is gorgeous!
Yes, you've comprimised on space but no, it's not crazy. Two reasons 1) it's NEW YORK and 2) you'll be near your family! Totally worth it in my eyes :) xx

  31. I live in less than 400 square feet which is much smaller than where you are going but my tips for living in a teeny space are:
    1. Get rid of as much superfluous crap as you can - and then don't get any more! I live by the something in - something out rule. Clutter is confusing in a small space - not relaxing. Be ruthless.
    2. Try to have as many things with a storage potential as you can - spaces like under the bed, next to the fridge - you can fit a lot in if you are tricky!
    3. Use your walls to display things that might not normally go there - like bikes, hats, handbags etc

Good luck with your move - sounds very exciting!

  32. I adore the place!! I am excited about moving but I'm still during the affordable place search mode! lol

  33. Great photos, lovely apartment! Your new apartment is bigger than our NYC place, which is about 650 sf. It really makes you think about what you need, what is important and what is beautiful to you. No room for anything else! Good luck with the move.

  34. Keeping your white couch is a good decision - I'm sure the white will make your small apartment seem larger!

  35. She uses great design elements to make the space look bigger. Notice all the mirrors, shiny surfaces in every room! Of course the white decor doesn't hurt either. The orange-gold painting is to die for!

  36. We just moved from FL to Monterey, CA last week and yes - I'm totally CRAZED! We too, just went from a beautiful 3 bd home with a big back yard, to a 600 square foot apartment - eesh. I'm looking for decor inspiration if you have any to share. Best wishes on your move!

  37. How exciting!!! I also love this place... built-ins are key for maximum storage. If I were you I would def incorporate some acrylic/mirrored furniture since they make a small space look more open while still providing functionality. Your white couch would look super hot with a big acrylic coffee table, some colorful pillows and a leopard throw over the back. Yum! Good luck :)

  38. So much eye candy in one post. I want her beverage cart! Must.Find.One.On.The.Cheap.
I think it's a good move to keep the large sofa. Nothing like getting horizontal on the sofa on a cold rainy day or finding cuddle time with the hubby to watch a movie. Who can do that on a dainty sofa? Big sofa = def priority for tall people like me. Ha!

  40. MIKKY: my bed is actually one of the only items im taking...and it doesnt have storage drawers BUT it has plenty of space underneath where i can store things. Great idea..i didnt even think of it since ive been so used to so much space. ha!

  43. BELLA: Great tips! thanks so much...the hanging things on walls - will be very useful.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ohhhh, you will love it. Plus the challenge is part of the fun of it. Try lots of mirrors to expand the space and lucite to take us less visual space. Also, storage ottomans, cubes etc. i like small chests for side tables (for more storage) -- also skirted tables for more storage underneath. Good luck!!!

  48. I moved over the summer and seriously...I thought I was going to burst with equal parts excitement and anxiety and nausea. We had been at our place for 6 years and at that point living together for about 9! So needless to say we had a lot of sh*t and half of it I've no idea where it came from! Plus I had packed up so much stuff the year before to make room for the baby! But once we got it all packed up and we moved it I felt better. And then once our new place started to come together it was even more amazing. Plus, hello?! You're moving to Manhattan! And honestly, what's better than that?! :)

PS--just got my new LOVE print in gold and will be sending you a photo of it up on my wall soon. I LOVE it (pun intended) :)

  49. I'm so behind I don't think I got to say Congratulations on your move!!! I know you must be so happy to go back to NYC! We're sort of looking for a new house don't really need one but the prices and interest rates are so low it's hard to resist- I'm trying not to get too excited just in case but I do LOVE moving! I just enjoy change.

  51. Very nice selections. Thanks for posting these ideas. My family will be moving out soon and we are planning to remodel the house we just bought. My sisters are fond of shoe racks and the one you posted is very much ideal for them since they have tons of shoes. The library is incredible! My books will look stunning in that book shelf, for sure. Others who are also considering having cabinets NJ will be delighted with what you have shared here. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your inspiring posts.
