To be HONEST our budget is $5000 & that would have to cover painting cabinets white & some kind of uppers. (Am I crazy???)
Now, the only OTHER option we thought about was that WE paint ALL the cabinets ourselves and then use the rest of the money for uppers. Hmmmm . It's the labor that is KILLING this whole deal for me.....oh, decisions, decisions & all I want for CHRISTMAS is a white kitchen..... (ok, and uppers too)!

I'll be HONEST, I'm a bit bummed out, but we have to move ahead & hope the next 2 bids give us some better news!

hang in there jen. it will all come through for you in the end. pretty and classy kitchen idea. love the lighting.
ReplyDeletehappy weekend to you!
The labor isn't that bad and the money you save is sooo worth it! Our kitchen is HUGE and painted all the cabinets not long ago. It's just a lot of time waiting for paint to dry really. I went in sections. I vote paint yourself and use money for uppers!
ReplyDeleteI love that lighting. Paint yourself if you have the patience. If not, hire help. I've learned the hard way. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteAwhhh, I hate that kind of let down. :crosses fingers for you:

If you invest in a nice spray gun and power sander (and have outdoor space!)it's not as much work as you'd think. I painted our cabinets white (Anthem White Valspar in soft gloss) this past summer, and they look great. Doing it totally myself, working maybe three hours a day it took me a couple of weeks to do 20 cabinet doors, four drawers and all the bases with sanding, couple coats of primer and three or four coats of paint. (I'm not a terribly speedy worker!) And they're holding up really well to use!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck! I'm really enjoying seeing how your place is turning out!
: ) Meg
It was a lot of work but hubby and I painted our cabinets ourselves and we feel proud of a job well done!! It's not too bad, probably the worst part is sanding and prepping, etc.

I feel your pain - we are constantly doing work around our home and the budget plays such a big part - there are so many ideas I have of things I would love to do if only we could afford it.
ReplyDeleteIf you can stomach the labor I say go for it. Otherwise get them painted for now and save up for some uppers at a later date. Best of luck with your other bids!
I'd suggest paint them yourself, then spend the money on uppers or another upgrade!
ReplyDeletei can't wait to see your finished kitchen! i think just by you turning all the cabinets to white will be beautiful. b/c you have those killer hanging pendants and you are so awesome with accessorizing a room that it will be stunning. you could always do the backsplash later.
ReplyDeleteIt will work out girl! I see a beautiful white kitchen in your future! the lighting looks amazing! xo
ReplyDeletejust came across your blog today. We are renovating a 100 yr old home. Fully gutted it! We got quotes for the kitchen and it was well out of our budget. We ended up purchasing our kitchen from Ikea. I know... I was nervous. After spending time looking at them in person and then reading tons online about it, we pulled the trigger. Plus we got 40% off custom countertops!! The cost of the cabinets would definitely fit your budget. Of course, the kitchen hasn't been installed yet so here's hoping for a great kitchen!

we painted ours with a sprayer. Only took one night and one full day. You can so do it. Worth saving the money.
ReplyDeleteI think that, painted, the kitchen will still look amazing even if you can't get uppers (and you can always add them later).
ReplyDeleteGreat lights!
We painted our kitchen cabinets white and added a tile floor this year. I will say it was a lot of work, but SOOO worth it. Use oil based primer if you do so, to really soak in and stick to the cabinets. (We didn't, wish I had). We also waited a week to put the doors back on, and they still seemed tacky. We put the little foam circles, so they wouldn't stick and that really helped.
ReplyDeleteA paint sprayer can make the job go by quick. But it save major $$
We painted our dark dark dark brown cabinets white, and it was a tremendous project. Coats and coats of primer and coats and coats of paint. Find someone to do it for you! I say this not to discourage, but to save your sanity...
ReplyDeleteA little advice from someone who did sand and paint their kitchen cabinets...DON'T DO IT YOURSELF! That money for labor is TOTALLY WORTH IT! I will never paint my own kitchen cabinets again! And I like to paint!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! :)
