KELLY BELLO DESIGN

As many of you may know, I tend to drift toward rings & necklaces when it comes to jewelry. So, when Kelly Bello offered one of her fantastic pieces I opted for a necklace. However, I wanted something that would represent my family. So, I requested 3 necklaces with each letter (J,N,M).  They wrote me back & said they could try something different like putting all the letters on one chain.

Oh!! Well, I loved that idea even more!!! I was the first to get this beautiful & dainty necklace. It's called the mini-triple letter necklace, but I call it my family necklace.  It's made of 14K gold & has a 16" chain, the perfect length in my opinion. For you couples with no kids...yes, they also have the double-letter one too! - I love this brand, because like myself Kelly is a Hispanic entrepreneur & is based out of NYC.

Below are a few of my favorite pieces. That square with pearl ring, so luxurious don't you think??

FASHION: LUX ON A BUDGET

Hi Lovelies! Sami from The Unexpected Type here to talk about keeping your fashion ultra-lux while on a college girl’s budget! Fashion influences the lives of many—who doesn’t want to walk around wearing the latest Dior? I’ll raise my hand to that! Budgets remain to be a questionable issue in the industry to whether it really is the key to true style. Trust me, it’s not!

So many expert fashionistas are mixing high and low, or even going low-end all around to show that true style isn’t in the price of the piece, but how you wear it. As a girl who once struggled on the impending college student budget, I learned a few tricks along the way that will keep you looking like a million bucks under $100 (seriously!)

Go Dainty
Dainty, minimalistic jewelry can get pricey, fast. The trend of simple jewelry started last year and accessorizing with minimal pieces is booming this year. You can find really simple pieces pretty much anywhere for under $5. Forever21 may be lacking in the quality of clothing, but their $3 dainty necklaces and bracelets will make up for that! I get compliments on my minimal pieces from F21 all the time—my priceless secret!

Grab a Clutch
All that hardware on your bag can make it look cheap or tacky. The hardware can wear away pretty fast, too, leaving tattered remains of a chain that once was (yikes!) Detach the extra chains and ditch the hardware for a super sleek clutch. You’ll go from “eh” in the accessories department to “Fashion Editor” with a capital F.

Upgrade Your Denim
I used to be the girl who bought a cheap piece of denim just because my favorite designer pair was getting worn way too many times only one way. Invest in a good pair of jeans! It’ll save you money, since you won’t be buying the cheapo’s every once in awhile. Try buying a pair of boyfriend or skinnies. You can cuff, roll, unroll, and tuck into many different options and lengthen the life of your denim wear.

Old Navy | The Boyfriend Skinny Ankle Jeans ($30) // American Eagle | Extreme Jegging ($50)

Get Monochromatic
All black, all white, all grey, even camel. Opt for one color in cool proportions and textures to create a super cool look everyone will be drooling over. It’s actually fun to put monochromatic looks together—it feels like a challenge! Did I mention how chic this is right now?

Asos | Tailored Sleeveless Boilersuit ($81) // Zara | Sash belt trousers with bow ($60) // H&M | Blouse with Trumpet Sleeves ($30)

Get Creative With Accessories
Your favorite silk scarf just turned into a purse accent Monday-Wednesday and a hairband Thursday and Friday. Reusing your accessories in interesting ways adds a very unexpected touch that will have people waiting to see exactly what you do next. You get more use out of your pieces and still make a style statement!

Scheid Industrial Jewelry

A friend of mine recently met with me & she was wearing this gorgeous necklace around her neck, I had to ask her where it was from. She said, her friend Kate makes them. I told her I wanted to know more about the jewelry and the designer....So, here is a bit about Kate.

Scheid Industrial jewelry designed and handmade by NorCal native, Kate Scheid, in her San Francisco studio. She uses a variety of techniques - from etching to gold plating to give each piece a unique look. Inspired by pattern, art, nature, industrial districts, bohemianism and yoga, Kate likes to imagine that her creations are modern pieces unearthed from ancient cultures. Each piece is 24k gold plated over brass.  Since these are brass pieces with gold plating, it's best to avoid wearing the pieces frequently in water as this could potentially affect the finish. But don't let that stop you...these are super chic & pretty!

Here I am wearing the double bar necklace, one of my faves!

This piece below I actually wore for my Madewell event recently! You can see me wearing it here.

If you want to buy any of the pieces above, you can email Kate directly via her email or byphone: 650-776-9281..... Or see if they are available on her Etsy page here.

Have a nice weekend!!

Trend: The Name Necklace

Were you around in the 80's?!?  If you said YES, then I'm sure you remember the popular personalized name necklaces that just about every teenage girl wore. And, they were so pricey!!

I was waaaaay too young & NOT cool enough to wear these - but all the older girls at my school definitely had them.  I knew one day I'd own one, but had no idea it would be in 2013.

Just to give you a little history, these name necklaces have been spotted on popular celebrities from Rhianna to Madonna. But the most iconic name necklace gal has to be Sarah Jessica Parker wearing her 'Carrie' necklace on Sex & the City! She revived the trend & made it popular - so once again, EVERY girl has to have one with her name on it!  Not only can you buy one with your name, but you can gift one to your best friend, or wear one with your daughter's name & so on! Get creative.

You can now buy these wanna-be Carrie Bradshaw necklaces made of 18k GOLD plated over Sterling silver at MADE BY GIRL.

My VISIT TO JULIE VOS SHOWROOM

I had the pleasure of being invited to the Julie Vos showroom to view the newest jewelry in her beautiful collection. Julie launched her collection in 2006 & is a fantastic jewelry designer, with a GREAT EYE for detail! She's based out of NYC & I couldn't wait to meet her & see my favorite pieces from the Acorn collection. Her line also includes beautiful scarves as well as a few ornate clutches.

Julie was VERY pleasant & easy-going - I had already heard so many nice things about her so I decided to bring her a gift with my visit. A gold LOVE print - to match all her pretty gold jewelry! Below is an inside look at her showroom & her office space, which I loved.  She is such an INSPIRATION to me in my own business....so thankful to have met her! All of these jewels can be found on her site here.

Below is another fave - the gold arrowhead necklace.

My Jewels Wishlist

I'm a ring, bracelet & necklace kinda gal

For whatever reason I'm not that into earrings. My husband always found that to be odd, since so many women wear earrings. Anyone else earring-less like me??

So, because I don't DO earrings I end up filling my jewelry drawer with necklaces, rings & bracelets. Lately my wishlist includes any of these below. Dying to get this Gold Shark necklace from ShopKei and of course the Acorn ring by Julie Vos

Are any of these your style?? Which of these could you see yourself wearing??

Julie Vos Jewelry

Welcome back this MONDAY! If you haven't heard of jewelry designer Julie Vos - then I'm happy to introduce her to you. She launched her collection in 2006 (almost same time that I launched this blog!) and her line has been a real hit - featured in the pages of Marie Claire, Lucky, InStyle, Martha Stewart,  Lonny Magazine and Vogue & more!

I've admired her jewelry line for quite sometime and am dying to get a few pieces! I love the gold aspect in almost all her designs - don't you? It's obvious I love them all but if I had to choose only two to add to my current collection, I'd choose this one and this one. The prices are reasonable & all these can totally be worn day or night!

DIY: Bead and Hardware Bracelet

Hello Made by Girl readers! It's Stephanie from Henry Happened back with another DIY project. If there's one thing I love, it's making bracelets.

And these are so insanely easy you won't be able to make just one. Read on for the how-to!

AZ0A1656 AZ0A1727

With spring soon upon us I wanted a bracelet that was light, simple and stackable. Doesn't this time of year make you want to clean out all the closets and purge everything?

When you're spring cleaning you might just find you already have most of the materials you need for this DIY. If not, it's a good excuse for a trip to Home Depot.

DIY Bead and Hardware Bracelets

IMG_3879

To make your own bracelets you will need:
  • Stretch Magic (found at any craft store)
  • Small wooden beads (Hobby Lobby is my favorite source for these)
  • 8mm gold hex nuts
  • Gold spikes are optional but make a fun addition
  • Scissors
AZ0A1729
IMG_3452

Start by stringing your beads and hex nuts onto the Stretch Magic. This stuff is super easy to work with. It feels kind of like fishing line but with stretch. My pattern was two beads followed by a hex nut, using about 10 beads.

Measure your wrist to make it the length you need. Give it a bit of extra room though so it's not too tight. If it's too small the beads will stretch apart too much, exposing the cord.

 IMG_3456

Once you are done stringing cut the Stretch Magic and knot it. Follow the package directions on making the knots because you don't want it to come undone.

 IMG_3458

Clip the ends and you're done! Then you'll say, 'That was so easy, let's make more!' And before you know it, you're addicted to making bracelets. There really ought to be a hotline for that.

AZ0A1655

You can make all kinds of patterns with the beads and hex nuts. And definitely add some spikes for a little edge. You can't go wrong with spikes, right?
