SERIES: MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

Hi, My name is Jeaneen Kelly and I am an Interior Designer/Stylist & occasional freelance writer, from Sydney, Australia.  I've chosen to share with you photos of my lounge room as It is definitely my favorite room in my house. The reason I chose this room is because I feel that it encapsulates my personal style as a designer to a tee. I really love bright, bold interiors that have a definite sense of fun, creativity and youthfulness. I am incredibly inspired by fashion and feel that in many respects, this room is evidence of that.

I love quirky elements such as surfboards and chandeliers, and GRAFFITI pop art. Fashion items such as my favorite heels and prized Chanel "twinsies" bags, along with fashion title books are all on display in vignettes around the room. I like to come home and be inspired by a mixture of fun pieces, quite honestly-it just makes me happy!

I am VERY much influenced by the surf/skate culture in Sydney, and love bold interiors with a touch of rock & roll that are fearless with color and accessories. My favorite piece in the room would have to be my French antique lounge found in a thrift store for FIFTY dollars, which I painted and reupholstered myself in a hot pink fabric.

In essence this space is an accumulation of my interests and passions as a young designer inspired by music, street-culture, art and fashion. I hope you enjoy the photos!

MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

Hey everyone! Suna here from SunasHouse & I’m a self-taught interior decorator and an interior designer wannabe. I’m a full time student studying interior decorating and also running a blog  about the small projects I do for my house. I love affordably well designed spaces and share the ideas with people. What having a cozy and welcoming work space means to me is “Being myself”. Especially when you are a mom of two sons and a wife to a husband, you usually don’t have a small space in the house that can reflect your own personality and colors. A well-designed office space makes work more efficient, productive, and organized and helps you refine yourself.

My home office used to be a small, formal dining room that was barely used. I wanted to transfer the space to a space that I can enjoy every day. My two dark wood tables were perfect for me to transform into a big desk, on which I could have enough space to decorate some objects that I like, read books & magazine, organize mails/bills, play with my camera and use my laptop. Now I have my work space and I feel more productive, efficient and professional.

It is my most used space in my house and I love sitting on the chair working and looking outside to enjoy the weather and greens. And I still can use the table as a dining table when I have guests over. I feel comfortable, cozy and more productive in my work space. Every girl has to have their own space/office to enjoy their work. If you have a room that was barely in use like mine, please transfer the space to a room that you’ll love and use.
Don’t limit your space. Don’t let space give you the purpose, but you give them the purpose that you want.

The thing that I love most about my office is that the space is no more abandoned and I have my own space to blog and spend my time in my house. I rebuilt and painted the two old dining tables to the big desk for me and I love it.

Do you have a fave space in your home? Email us a few photos & if we choose you, it could be featured in this series!

MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

My name is Debbie Bouchard and I am a paralegal from Vancouver, British Columbia.   After fifteen years of renting, my boyfriend and I bought a condo and decorating it has become a bit of a hobby.  My favourite space is our living room with its office nook. I wanted our first place to be colourful, lively, original, and full of love.  After a long day, it’s nice to come home to a warm, cozy space...made complete with our beloved dog, Olive!

MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

Hey everyone! I'm Joanne Herda from Floor24Designs and I can't wait to show you my space. What is it, you may ask? Well, my favorite area in my home is.... my office.

My office space was intended to be utilized as a coat closet. But, the moment I looked in that "closet" I was already envisioning it as my private home office. I immediately took down all the measurements and started contemplating how to decorate and furnish this lovely space.

I took the previous white walls and added a splash of glam with a big print wallpaper. I surround myself with beautiful, fun & most importantly meaningful items. This helps me stay in a productive zone while working. I have artwork which my son painted, a limited edition poster of Madonna from her MDNA Tour, a vintage lamp, a small collection of glass paperweights and much more meaning items displayed on my desk.

My office is quite organized. Not only because I am such a Type A personality, but I perform many duties in that space. I am a Business Owner, Homeschool Mom, and American Heart Association Passion Committee Member.

I look at my office as a place to get-away, a place to relax with a cup of coffee while reading blogs, and as a place that I can accomplish A LOT of work!

I LOVE surrounding myself with beautiful and meaning items, my office gives me a huge embrace of goodness every time I'm there.

MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

It's Hannah here, from inspirationalbliss. I wanted to send you some pictures of my favorite space in our small NYC apartment...my daughter's nursery. It's such a great space with amazing windows which, as you know, can be very hard to come by in the city! When I designed her room, I wanted it to be a room we would want to spend time in. My husband and I both are not fans of pastel pink everything like a lot of traditional girl nurseries!

We wanted a simple, stylish room filled with character that our baby girl could grow up in. I like to mix modern and vintage pieces which is why I chose such a modern crib, white dresser, and rocker to balance out my great grandmother's dresser, little antique nick-knacks, boho style pom-pom garland we have above her crib, as well as the vintage inspired marquee light of her name that I made when I was 9 months pregnant! I'd have to say my favorite spot in her room is the reading nook we created in the corner.

It gets amazing morning sunlight and I find Vivienne sitting there reading her books all the time. The colorful blanket we have on the floor was made by her great grandmother, which just makes the space all the more special. I also love the painting I made for above her changing table. She loves to look at all the colors in it when she's getting changed everyday.

MY HOME, MY SPACE

What is your favorite area in your home and why?

What an exciting series, I'm so happy to be a part of it! My name is Brooke and I would like to introduce to you my chosen space. Here is my kitchen, a space I truly LOVE. Our kitchen did not always look like this (I will include a before picture for you to see the difference). When we purchased our town home, I had mixed feelings - I was so excited to be a first-time home owner, but the kitchen was just so far from my dream kitchen (dark cabinets, dark granite...just overall DARK!), and I had always dreamed of a bright, white kitchen.

 BEFORE:

We decided to re-do the kitchen, but we were working with a tight budget, so having to be very resourceful was a challenge, but a lot of fun at the same time. We replaced the counters, cabinet hardware, and backsplash, painted the cabinets white, and had roman shades made to replace the existing (you guessed it, DARK) bamboo shades. The transformation is something I am very proud of, and I am so happy we decided to go through with it.

I cook for my family (husband and baby girl) 5 nights a week, so having a space that I enjoy is essential, and I am so thankful for that. I hope you enjoy the transformation!

Renting: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Hi everyone! This is Taylor from Taylor Morgan, here to share with you my experience with renting.

The GOOD

The biggest plus to renting is not having the responsibility of fixing things when they break or go wrong. I love being able to pick up my phone, make a simple phone call and have someone come to fix everything that day without a bill to pay! Stress free! There is an excitement to being able to live in lots of fun places as well. I have lived in LA, Austin, and now NYC and have loved every where I have rented (NYC being the favorite though!). And in NYC more people rent than own so it's just kind of the norm. I love it.

The greatest part about renting in NYC compared to other cities I've lived in is that they let you do more to your apartment (as long as you keep it nice) because they know most people are renters but still want to feel at home. Our building is great with letting you paint & such so I don't feel to restricted even though I am a renter. I painted stripes and mounted our t.v. so I'm a happy camper!

The BAD

Space. There isn't a lot of it in an apartment. Especially an apartment in NYC. Husband and I live in a 500 square foot studio apartment in downtown Manhattan. I was really skeptical about a studio at first, but surprisingly I don't feel to cramped. Our apartment seems to be the perfect size for the two of us. The depressing part is that we pay more in rent for our 500 square foot apartment than most of our friends' house mortgages in other states. But then I remember I just said friend's in other states and I actually feel bad for them that they don't also live in NYC. So it evens out.

The UGLY

Neighbors that are to close for comfort. The smaller the apartments are, the closer your neighbors are. I don't actually hear my neighbors to often but I feel like they must hear us. I feel like we are loud but who knows?! It's more the smells that get to me. Like when they are cooking something that I think stinks or even worse, smoking something that really stinks! Be considerate people. We live so close we obviously have to share the same air! Biggest pet peeve.

Overall though, I feel like renting appeals more to me at this stage in my life. I am not ready to commit to one place, it scares me more than committing to marriage to tell you the truth. Makes me feel to tied down. Although I'm sure I won't find it scary to commit to when we are buying our dream penthouse in the city one day. Until then, I am a happy renter!

Check out this VIDEO we made.  It's our cheesy version of MTV cribs.

If you'd like to share, the good, the bad, the ugly of living in a rental, email me your submission with 3-4 pictures of your apartment!
