Thank God Friday is finally here - aren't you glad?? Today's post is about a DIY project we worked on in our home. Check it out....
So after my master closet was done, we decided it was time to tackle the dining room area. The wall across from the table looked TERRIBLY lonely & sparse. I'd been on a SERIOUS & frustrating hunt for a sideboard & came up with nothing every time! Well, I won't lie, I found a few, but they were well OVER my budget!
After seeing this post on Apartment Therapy, I thought it would be a
great idea for our space! So, we tried IKEA!
CABINETS:
Ikea Akurum cabinets 36" wide x 24" high with white high gloss Abstrakt doors.
We placed them 8" off the floor. The IKEA rail system needed at least 3 stud screws with 3
toggle bolts in addition. Total dimensions are 12' x 24"H x 13"D. We also had end caps but decided not to install them because the ends were close enough to the walls.
PULLS:
I decided that instead of using standard IKEA pulls or knobs .... I was
going to try something different. Something that would give it less of an
IKEA look & more of a high-end feel. I found the perfect pulls while
reading Erika's kitchen renovation post. She's got such great style
that I didn't even question it & purchased them via myknobs.com. I bought 8 brushed brass pulls for a total of $61. So, what do you think??
TOP PIECE:
As some of you know, these cabinets have annoying &
visible screws at the top - so we had to figure out a way to cover
them... They're ugly. We went to a local lumber yard & bought a 13 foot x 14" piece of poplar with no visible knots & had it milled. Cost of the wood - $28. The depth had too much
overhang so my guy VERY carefully trimmed the back with a circular saw to
give us a 1/8" overhang.
FOR THE WOOD STAIN:
We used a mixture of Jacobean and Ebony Minwax stain (in all, we
only used 2 small cans) to give it a brown-black finish. Remember to
sand it before and between all coats. A third/final coat we used an
Antique Walnut Minwax Polyshade (thin layer of polyurethane) to give it a
protective finish. The top is glued and screwed (remember to use ones
that won't pierce the top) to the cabinets.

AFTER:
MY COMMENTS:
My guy was amazing- he managed to build the entire thing & make it
look flawless.
One ISSUE.... The entire piece stretches about 12 feet long. Soooo guess
what!!?? I'm at a LOSS for what kind of accessories to put on top?!?
All I have is books & a vase, but I'm open to suggestions. Any
ideas?!?!?!? Pls help!

Let me be the first to say that this looks absolutely fabulous! It's the perfect depth to compliment the structure and detail of the walls and the rest of the room surrounding, and blends in gorgeously! Congratulations and well done! x
ReplyDeleteHard to believe this is Ikea! The beautiful timber top and those fab gold knobs make all the world of difference. And it has pulled the whole space together beautifully. What I can't stop looking at though are those wonderful timber floor boards! They are stunning!
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning outcome! I love the clean lines of the floating piece and how creative! also its amazing for tons of storage. well done!

It looks beautiful!!! I love how it kind of mimics your dining table, dark wood and white chairs. The gold pulls make it look high end. I've always loved how you can display pretty dishes on buffets, maybe a tea/coffee set up? a vase of flowers would also look good. xx-Jackie
ReplyDeleteIt is perfect to your dinner room. I like so much the pulls. Great discover and thanks for sharing! Nice weekend, Jen....
ReplyDeletegreat job Jen! the cabinet pulls are a winner.
ReplyDeletei would enjoy the top bare for now and slowly find something special in my future travels......

It looks amazing - you would never think it was IKEA (although I personally love IKEA!). You've definitely got a lot of space on top to 'dress' - what fun! XX
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabolous and the pulls are great to! In my opinion I think you should put a light, a vase with flowers and some candles!
ReplyDeleteLooks sensational! those brass knobs are kick ass.
ReplyDeletelets be bffs jen so that i can freeload off this fabulous home u have lol... i love it!!! i love the painting over your buffet as well!!! i've been renovating the home my grandma have blessed us with and everytime i need inspiration for a room i turn to you... im hoping my hard work pays off :)

Jen,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job. love how that piece fills that space.
Congratulations!
Oh WOW!!!! I Love how it turned out! So sophisticated! Great job! And how about one or more nice plants? Or a really cool cactus?
ReplyDeleteI think greens always give rooms life!
Looks absolutely amazing and completely custom! LOVE the matted hardware against the high gloss of the cabinets.
ReplyDeleteAs for styling...I'm all about lots of books, but as it's the dining room, what about stacks of collected (maybe gold-rimmed) plates. Score some at resales and fleas.
I do love the pulls - it gives a more glamorous and refined touch.
ReplyDeleteReally looks great - that wall was screaming for something and now looks perfect! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE what you have done with the space! I have the same Ikea cabinets in my kitchen, I think they look great! The knobs and the countertop look incredible. It really looks so custom! I'm inspired!
ReplyDeleteWOW! It looks so fantastic! The entire room looks so pulled together. And I love the shot with your pups :o)
ReplyDeleteThere is no way I would have ever known that any of that was Ikea! It looks very custom! I love the brass knobs and the top that matches your dining room table. As far as something to put on top, if you don't already have a bar set up in the living room, why not get a nice try and create a home bar! You guys have done a great job on your home and we all love seeing your updates!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for a while on Google Reader, and I'm a big fan of your style. I couldn't help but comment on this post! These floating shelves look AMAZING. You made some relatively simple changes (drawer pulls, new top) and managed to make these IKEA floating shelves look incredibly high end and make your space look divine. Beautiful, beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever need drawer pulls, I came across this Etsy shop the other day:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/Violetteslippers
Fairly inexpensive and very unique drawer pulls.
I LOVE IT! Who is that painting by above the cabinets? Did you do that? It's stunning!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love it! It looks like it was made to go there! You are so blessed to have a handy hubby!
ReplyDeleteGreat use of the space! I love the contrast throughout your entire home. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt looks incredible! I would have never guessed this is Ikea. It's amazing how you can make anything look more expensive with just a few changes. The knobs and top make it look phenomenal. I need cabinetry in my office and this may just be perfect. Thanks for all your inspiration and creativity.
ReplyDeleteok Jenn, this is ABSOLUTELY unreal, looks incredibly expensive and all kinds of stylish, as far as accesorizing it, I would leave it as it is, because the piece is to fabulous already, maybe add a bowl or something but really, its PERFECT!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Those pulls are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWow!! It looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteI would put books there, I love books :)
Emx
L.O.V.E It came out looking fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteWow! It looks great, and I love those cabinet pulls!
ReplyDeleteOh my! It looks amazing! Try some tall candlsticks in a metallic finish?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning, in love with the knobs!
ReplyDeleteWhat about a row of metallic bud vases? I think that would look nice.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a row of, like 7 metallic bud vases?
ReplyDeleteWhat a big difference! IT makes the room look so finished, even without "the right" accessories on top. What about setting up a pretty little bar on a big tray?
ReplyDeleteHeather
loveyourspace.blogspot.com
It looks great, Ikea can be very versatile! How about a nice little tray with some perrier, a martini shaker, glasses etc. I think a little color maybe good!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I have a similar conundrum in my dining room, I'm in dire need of storage, a blank wall needs dressing up but I can't get a sideboard that's too deep.
ReplyDeleteAs for what to put on top I think you have a lot of options: as a previous poster mentioned a coffee or tea set up, or even a mini bar with pretty decanters, maybe some objets like driftwood for a more beachy vide, or Kelly Wearstler-esque gold pices (would tie in nicely with your kitchen lighting fixtures). You can always change it up!
http://idlefascination.blogspot.com/
great job! i love it. i went into anthropologie yesterday and saw this (see link) and now i am obsessed.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=21184437&catId=HOME-CANDLE&pushId=HOME-CANDLE&popId=HOME&navCount=6&color=010&isProduct=true&fromCategoryPage=true&isSubcategory=true&subCategoryId=HOME-CANDLE-HOLDERS
what about putting dining plates?
ReplyDeleteLooks fab, not Ikea-ish at all! Love the door handles especially... I can't remember from your previous posts if you have a bar area somewhere (so sorry if you do!) but a tray with glasses and decanters etc could go at one end to shorten the space a bit? Then books, vases etc.
ReplyDeleteJen - this piece looks amazing! I would say to accessorize it slowly with an assortment of different items. Definitely include some design books!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
xx
Joanna
Its beautiful, I think if you keep it simple with a pretty vase and flowers for a splash of color. Also your art is always colorful, maybe a bright piece of art above it will work.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so great! Your man did a great job cutting down the wood on top. And those knobs are fantastic! ...maybe display something that goes with the room, like different sized cake stands even spaced in a row. It could also be a great place to add a pop of color.
ReplyDeleteHey.. this is so gorgeous... amazing.. these DIY projects are so inspiring. As for how to fill up the space.. my suggestion would be loads of your fav pictures from trips.. in frames of vibrant colors.. of just white frames of different designs and sizes... bunched up..!!!!:):)..
ReplyDeleteThis looks AMAZING!!!!! Great job! I would've never guessed Ikea! It's beautiful! As far as styling hope this helps:

ReplyDeleteIt really looks awesome... and I want to marry those brass knobs!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh your house is coming together SO WELL. its just stunning and good job on the hardware, they look so high end.
ReplyDeleteJen!! My jaw just dropped! That looks so freakin amazing. I actually have a similar wall in my living room and you have given me ideas:) You are one talented lady and the pulls are gorgeous.

schthat looks so fabulous, if i have enough space in my place I'd do something similar

WOW! That looks stunning. With the new knobs and top I would have never guessed it was from Ikea.
ReplyDeleteJen! That is sockingly awesome! I just pinned two of these 'fauxdenza's' this week... LOVE the idea! I need a place to put one in my home!
ReplyDeleteThe shelves look so good, Jen! Wow. And I LOVE the pulls.
ReplyDeletegorgeous (along with the rest of your house)! looks totally high-end.
ReplyDeleteholy cow, wow! i have no idea how to express how beautiful this turned out! you & your man make a great team & never fail to amaze!
ReplyDeleteThe black and white with the gold handles works so well. Really love the whole black and white with pops of color in the whole room theme.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very cool project. I love creative diys! Btw, love those stools and your wood floors! And I can’t get enough of those boxers!! ADORABLE!! I want one!!
ReplyDeleteLooks FANTASTIC, Jen! You guys did a great job. Looks "built in" like it was there all along.

Ok Jen...lets trade! Your house, for my apartment...LOL

I'd say add a couple sconces, even the ones just for candles, on each side of that painting (great by the way). Then some smaller artwork that can be leaned against the wall and easily interchanged. Do you have a bar area? That would be a perfect place for a tray, glasses and alcohol/sparkling water, whatever.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fab! Have fun decorating!
Do you think it's strong enough to put a large lcd tv on it? We are looking for something for our tv room and have a huge bare wall like yours. Love, love, love it!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the cabinets!!! Delicious! At the black top and brass hardware with the sheen on front are to die for. Which brings me to my idea....you know the horse photo from zgallerie? the big white one that's in your nursery design on another blog? that would be amazing above your cabinets...and in the room. but I know it's expensive.
ReplyDeleteAlso, maybe a midcentury white or white and gold ceramic vase or JonathanAdler Style piece.
It's beautiful, my advice: put some nice candles
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Those cabinets are awesome, and I think the pulls are the perfect choice?
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that came into my head was to bring in something elegant and organic. I really loved the terrarium centerpiece they did on The High Low Project, and it could look beautiful on your cabinets. Terrarium sounds so elementary school, but this whole dining room was gorgeous when she finished with it.
http://www.hgtv.com/video/dining-room-dream-come-true-video/index.html
Ohhh I love the look, especially with the brass handles. How much weight will the cabinets hold??
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me. It looks like a high-end custom built-in credenza (which I guess it technically is). It doesn't look like Ikea at all!
ReplyDeleteLove the shot of your pooches in the foreground, the little darlings.
TRACI: Yes, As long as you stud it onto the wall in 2 different places, it should hold the tv. :)
ReplyDeleteANDI: Ooooh yes, great idea. I also thought of sconces on each side...- i really liked these:

I dont have a bar area- but may add something on here as you said... thank you so much!
Holy Cow Jen!! Your hubby did a phenominal job!! The Cabinet looks great and I love the idea of placing the pc of wood on top to hide the ugly stuff.
ReplyDeletenails.
ReplyDeleteLove your gorgeous floating cabinets! Your hubby did an amazing job! The space looks so finished now. The gold pulls are stunning, it makes everything look so much more high end! And I am in love with your beautiful floors, too!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend!

AMAZING! You are my hero, hope you don't mind, so biting your style. We have a similar situation in our dining room. It is perfectly flawless! Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!! I think Jonathan Adler's bird bowl, or bird sculptures would look perfect! Also like the idea of a bar tray, and some gold rimmed dinnerware.
ReplyDeleteThis looks just amazing =).
ReplyDeleteFor decor, I would go definitely with simmetry: you'll never be wrong. I would choose a pair of lamps/tall objects for both sides of the piece. In the middle, I would probably put a special piece (a small sculpture, for example) or maybe a modern flower arrangement, with a rectangular vase. For the rest of the space I would pile some books (just some, 2-4, in order not to make it look untidy) or some matching frames with black and white photos =).
http://bloobreyplace.blogspot.com
What a great project! I love the knobs, I think it's the icing on the cake. What a creative and cost effective was to use the space!
ReplyDeleteHi, just "stumbled on your blog...Love it!!!!
ReplyDeletethe decor of that dining/living area is so european, the arch reminds me of the restructured rustic country homes in Tuscany....
I would place large bowls of fruit (lemons, oranges, pears, apples, grapes,...) on the tables.
That and a couple glasses and a good bottle of brunello
This looks so high end! You have a great eye and great taste! Love the painting, is it a Cocoa & Hearts?
ReplyDeletewow it's gorgeous, youll fill it with coffeetable books and other pretty things you will collect, don't worry, enjoy it being empty at the moment xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job!
ReplyDeleteFramed pictures of loved ones would be a great addition. Maybe also a couple more vases of different sizes in the same color scheme/look as the vase you already have sitting on the cabinet.
Excellent project, it looks amazing! I agree with the other comments that the brass pulls and the time you spent to finish the top really give the piece an amazing finished look! As for your dilemma on what else to add to style the top,I think you've started well with the books and the vase. I'd add a nice large sculptural object... Maybe a long, stylish platter or such. Or- move the books to the middle and do a couple of style vignettes on each end with different items that mimic each other, but don't match exactly. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be beautiful!

Dear Jen,
ReplyDeleteI loved your new floating cabinet and all the nice ideas - knobs and top piece. Would you allow me to share these lovely ideas with my blog readers (http://lardulcilar.blogspot.com) here in Brazil? I would love to!
Many thanks!
Dulci
DULCI: You can go ahead & blog about this as long as you credit the images with a proper link back to my blog :)) Thank you for asking!
ReplyDeleteOh so worth the hassle of not having an Ikea near you. Looks just like it was meant to be there.
ReplyDeleteI would go with large chunky candlesticks, a vintage tray with cool vintage glasses and ice bucket. A large decorative vases would finish off the look...west elm has some really beautiful ones. Great job you two!
Let me ust say that your husband did do a fabulous job.. they do lok flawless and completely professional.. secondly well yes i knw filling up a long space can be a real challenge to the creativity.. i think you could arrange bottles of varied lengths to reflect some of the same vibe you reflect in your paintings.. or can be a great display of a collection.. or an aray of sculptures..
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to ask, where did you get the chevron coffee mugs?
Dear Jen, thank you very much! I sure my readers will love your cabinet creative solutions!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to take a look just go to http://lardulcilar.blogspot.com/2011/09/o-poder-da-customizacao.html
Wow it looks great! Love the gold knobs for the less Ikea look. A big tray with vintage botles will look great and candle lanterns. I also love to transform Ikea stuff, one of these days I'll send you some pics. If you have some minutes visit my blog at home-styling.blogspot.com. I would love to post about your cocoa heart paintings. Is that ok with you?
ReplyDeleteit's BEAUTIFUL, jen! congrats!
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks AMAZING! He did such a great job! It looks fabulous and really makes the room more useful!
ReplyDeletesteAMAZING.. so pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI Loooooove your home! =) Fabulous! Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteWow it looks great. What about clear glass apoth jars and cake stands or anything silver? You could fill jars with a color and change it our for season.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
E
Might sound like a silly idea, but it seems like the perfect place for photos of family and friends (in frames of course)
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful! I love the dark wood on top. What a difference it makes. Great job!
ReplyDeleteJen the gold brass pulls look really amazing. I was a great pick. Concerning what you can put I would look for a big chic gold table lamp... I love black, white and gold, as you can see here
ReplyDeletehttp://perfect-home.blogspot.com/2011/09/black-white-and-preto-branco-e.html
This post is really a great inspiration.
Inês
LOVE how they came out- and those pulls are AWESOME! They look like the ones I'm about to install on some cabinets in my house :)
ReplyDelete. : The chevron coffee mugs are from MIKASA :) Mine are silver & black, but they also have them in gold and black..really pretty!
ReplyDeleteI am so in awe of this project, the cabinets look absolutely gorgeous and I love the pulls you picked. So custom and expensive looking!
ReplyDeletewow that looks great. Would it work to leave an opening underneath for desk space in between two of the cabinets? thinking of that for our kitchen...
ReplyDeleteany accessories from Jonathon Adler - looks awesome
ReplyDeleteBrava!
It looks gorgeous! It makes your dining room look so much more finished. And I love how you got rid of the out-of-a-box feel of the Ikea cabinets with your customizations.
ReplyDeleteIt would be tricky filling up all the space on top without taking away from the simple, clean look of your house. Maybe a couple lamps could go at either end, and then the accessories you've already got could just slide in towards the center a little more?
www.inside-outdesign.blogspot.com
BROOKE: Thank you for your suggestions..so many good ones in this post! Although lamps was my first choice...Its a bit narrow on the top part of the shelving, so its going to be a challenging finding the right lamps, if i decided on that.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about keeping the clean lines- hope i achieve that look with what I end up putting there. :)
What difference those gold knobs make. They look amazing. Very well done, Jen!
ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely amazing - and your kitchen and living room are also ridonkadonk, I can only dream my house will look this good one day! We're installing Ikea kitchen cabinets right now...what do you mean by "The IKEA rail system needed at least 3 stud screws with 3 toggle bolts in addition"? Did it say somewhere that each suspension rail needs to be bolted to at least three studs? Toggle bolts?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely smashing. Love!
ReplyDeleteKATIE AND ELISE: Yas the black and white painting was done by me....happy to hear you like it!
ReplyDeleteI can not thank you enough for this post. My cabinets look AMAZING and I have been looking for pulls like these for ages! Thank you, thank you for doing all the hard work for me. Love to send you a photo.
ReplyDeleteThanks again, Marushka
This looks amazing!!! I've been debating forever about putting a console table or buffet in our dining room. There isn't a lot of space, so it has to be narrow and long. This may be the perfect solution!
ReplyDeleteI am so doing this! It is going to be perfect in my new dining room! Can you share exactly which cabinet you used from ikea? They have so many in the Akurum system and I am having a hard time pinpointing the one you used. Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteLove love love your style, i enjoy reading your blog everyday.
ReplyDeleteWas thinking of doing this, now I KNOW I will...the pulls just made it. However, I am having serious light envy...where did you get the dining and kitchen lighting? You rock!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! love this place, black & white contrast!!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely amazing OMG!! When i first saw it i couldnt believe it was from ikea! You are so talanted! I actually bought the same set up now and I am having the piece of wood stained for the top! My only question is which kind of screws did you use and How did you screw it on? I dont see any drill holes on the top? Did you screw it from the bottom and made a hole in the ikea cabinet? Also which glue did you use? Sorry for all the questions I will email you a pic when it is all done bc you totally inspired me!!! Thank you Jen!!!
ReplyDeleteDANIELLE: So glad you like it...it looks even better in person, so glad we did this.
ReplyDeleteWe screwed the top piece from underneath....you have to go into the ikea cabinets...just make sure the screws are smaller. We used 3 per cabinet and also used epoxy .
Hope this helps! Would love to see pics of yours!
Okay got it! Thanks so much I cant wait for it to all be done! Should be a week or so til I can complete it then will send pics! You rock!!!
ReplyDeleteHello! Your cabinets look fab! Wondering if you did anything special to protect the high gloss panels when drilling the holes for the knobs? Did you drill from the front or from the back? We're about to customize our own Abstrakt cabinets with new pulls, but we're afraid we'll somehow splinter the panel when drilling the holes.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your help!
Very beautiful, what was the total cost of the project, and I do think the knots are prefect.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing, simply gorgeous...and love your large art piece above. Janell
ReplyDeletehi, do you mind telling me where you got that white leather bench thats in the background?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea!
ReplyDeleteJust have 3 questions:
First, can this be done with the ikea cabinets with drawers?
Also, how did you put the knobs without damaging the doors?
Finally, where are your dining chairs from? They are absolutely stunning!
Thanks!!!
I love this and have a similar wall in my living room. Where did you buy the artwork?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! Anna
Nice! Thr artwork is my own..i painted it. Its from my cocoa & hearts collection. you can view more in my shop madebygirl.com under 'original art'
ReplyDeleteHi, I am writing for a Danish DIY magazine: http://goerdetselv.dk/ and I would like to use the picture of your Ikea Akurum cabinets for an article about rebuilding Ikea furnitures. Please e-mail me for further informations and permission: lisbeth.chabert@bonnier.dk Thank you in advance. BR Lisbeth
ReplyDeleteHi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI know this is an old post, but still I love it. Your kitchen looks Beautiful.
