Still Out & About...on my Trip

First, I'd like to know how was your 4th of July weekend? I happen to be away still and am now in Texas. I should be home tomorrow and away from this awful humidity. I LOVE dry climates, mainly because MY HAIR, being naturally curly... holds up better than in HUMID weather!

While here in TEXAS I've decided to hit some of the antique shops. They had quite a collection of interesting items although I ended up buying only a couple things: A large nun's wooden rosary and a few bars of soap imported from France. Below is a highlight of my trip to some of the antique shops. Enjoy!

So, what are the best antique shops in your town? I'd love to know!

Below is the 'The Red Rooster' in New Braunfels - this place was pretty large & even had it's own cafe' inside- with tons of people. I loved it!

Below we visited 'Gruene River Antiques'. A two story shop with lots of old & interesting pieces!

We also ate lunch at a little place called "The River House Tea Room" - which was delicious! Both the food as well as the fresh brewed black (iced) tea they served!

Below was my plate, pistachio-crusted pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and veggies.

And below is what my husband ordered: grilled reuben panini with tortillas.

Here's the LARGE vintage nun's rosary I bought at one of the shops. It's large and super pretty in person!!

I'm always looking to check out shops in other cities. So, what are the best antique stores in your town? Which is your favorite??  I'd love to know!

  1. I love antique/vintage shops. There are a ton here in Brooklyn, NY, as well as many flea markets. Brooklyn Flea is one of the best!

  9. I love that you mention your hair in humidity!! I am Egyptian with naturally curly hair which turns into a puff-ball in high humidity, despite my professional grade straightening iron! Lol :) Hope you are having fun!

  10. Holland, Michigan has one of the best around. I've purchased two typewriters, my vanity, and tons and tons of little gifts.

Hope you had a good time in my home state. And yeah, humidity, it's the pits!

  12. Had no idea you were going to NB! I hope you make it to the Grist Mill (seat by the river is a must!) and catch a show at Gruene Hall (oldest dance hall in Texas.)

Fredricksburg (about 1.5 hours northwest of there) has great antique stores and all of the Homestead stores which are amazing!

  13. I'm from Oregon, and Aurora is a famous town for Antiques...i'ts like a chain of Antique resorts..I went there last February for a Valentine trip:

    http://www.dhee-ghee.com/2010/02/valentine-in-utopian-town.html

I only bought 4 pcs of antique wooden shoe forms.

Do you have any idea how much those deer horns in your photos costs? (pic.10 & 16)...I found worth $20- $35 several pieces from the Flea Markets, and the half mannequin ? Oh, I'm always in love to those!

  15. I went to visit my brother-in-law in New Braunfels a couple years ago and we spent a day in Gruene and I enjoyed those exact same shops :)

There aren't many actual "antique" shops in my city but a few good thrift stores - actually I just blogged about a few vintage finds I picked up over the weekend - I love thrifting!

But I live far, far away from Texas. Shucks. I have been watching ebay, but not on a regular basis. Enjoy your trip and treasure hunting jaunts!

  22. If you're ever in San Diego, we have several great ones on Newport Ave. @ Ocean Beach and on Girard St. in La Jolla. Another spot is on Cedros Ave. @ Solana Beach.

  23. St. Augustine FL.... it has at least 20 of them in a square foot radius ( a bit of an exaggeration) but it was the place where America was found and its the oldest city in the country! Talk about some good antiques, and a wonnnderffull vacation. I recommend going in the Fall and staying in one of the bed and breakfasts around. Its such a precious city- and my favorite place, but i swear im not biased.

Wow, there are some treasures in those photos! I'm kind of dying over that pink bed - but my cat would loooove to scratch it up I'm sure!

In Seattle, Pacific Galleries Antique Mall is the highlight, but the Pike Place Antiques is good too, and there is an odd little assortment in the Fremont neighborhood where you can find midcentury stuff. The Fremont street market is good for trinkets too!

This is so interesting. It's surprising how many things seem popular in Texan antique shops that I'd not be surprised to see over here in London or in the small antique shops on the south coast in Kent where I am from orginally. Like the vintage phones. Style is international!

  35. I can't believe you are in Greune! You better float the river for me...All of my favorite junk/antique shops are in Texas. Austin specifically, although driving through the hill country and stopping at the random roadside spots is pretty much my bliss. HOpe you are having a blast despite that blazin' humidity!

  38. I love the phone in the first pic. I attended undergrad school in Santa Barbara...and I visited their antique shops at least once a week while I lived there...I now only live a little less than 2 hours away but every time I visit SB I have to stop by the antique stores...I do not remember the names ...but there are at least 6 great shops all located on State Street. Santa Barbara is gorgeous and if you've never been, you definitely need to go.
